As their tribute to Sigurd S. Larmon '14, retiring chairman of the board, the employees of Young and Rubicam, one of the country's leading advertising agencies, have given Dartmouth College $40,000 with which to endow the Sigurd S. Larmon Scholarship. It is their wish, they said, to have a Sigurd S. Larmon Scholar at Dartmouth in perpetuity and to have the income from the fund pay the full tuition of such a scholar.
The tribute to Mr. Larmon came as a surprise to him at the annual meeting of the Young and Rubicam employees at the Hotel Commodore, New York, on December 11. Mr. Larmon was known to his company associates as an untiring worker for Dartmouth's welfare and as one of the largest contributors to the College's scholarship program, and it was therefore decided that the establishment of this special Larmon Fund would be especially appropriate and would please him more than any other tribute or gift the employees could present to him as he retired.
Robert K. Hage '35, director of Dartmouth's Office of Financial Aid, was present at the December meeting to accept the $40,000 check from George H. Gribbin, president of Young and Rubicam. Prof. Russell R. Larmon '19, brother of the retiring chairman, also attended as a surprise guest.
Another honor paid Mr. Larmon recently was his selection as the 1962 recipient of the Advertising Gold Medal sponsored by Printers' Ink. The formal presentation will be made February 14 at a luncheon at New York's Americana Hotel. Mr. Larmon was with Young and Rubicam for 33 years, not only rising to the top post in that company but becoming one of the influential leaders in the whole advertising industry.
