THE second of the "Dartmouth in the Public Service" Conferences was held at the College on the weekend of February 23-24 under the sponsorship of the Public Affairs Center. The discussion sessions that brought together alumni, faculty, students, and a number of distinguished guests followed the pattern of last April's inaugural conference and were again directed by Prof. Gene M. Lyons.

Three general meetings held in Sanborn House library dealt with "The Public Service: The Student View," "The Public Service: The View from Within," and "Dartmouth's Public Service Program." At a dinner in Alumni Hall of Hopkins Center on Saturday night, President Dickey presided and the guest speaker was Don K. Price, Dean of the Graduate School of Public Administration at Harvard.

"The View from Within" was presented by an alumni panel of James H. Wakelin Jr. '32, Assistant Secretary of the Navy in charge of research and development; Peter A. Larson '47, executive director of Wilmington's Commission on Zoning and Planning; and Berl I. Bernhard '51, staff director of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights.

"The Student View" was presented by three of the twelve Dartmouth seniors who participated last summer and fall in the College's public service intern program. James Friedman '63 was an intern with the Greater Cleveland Foundation, Timothy Kraft '63 with the Democratic Senatorial Campaign, and Peter Stern '63 with the National Labor Relations Board.

Some of the guest participants in the conference are shown in the accompanying photographs. Others were Ellis O. Briggs '21, former U.S. Ambassador to Korea, Brazil, and Greece; Christian Chapman of the U.S. Department of State; Arnold Frutkin, director of international programs for NASA; Richard J. Healey of the Civil Service Commission; Robert C. Hill '42, former U.S. Ambassador to Mexico; James McDevitt of the U.S. Department of State personnel division; Donald Matthews, director of personnel for the NLRB; Ronald Spiers '48 of the U.S. Department of State; John Stillman, Deputy Under Secretary of Commerce; Peter Sussman of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights; and Rodney B. Wagner of the Near East and South Asia Bureau of the Agency for International Development.

Also attending the conference were three former Class of 1926 Public Service Fellows: Paul D. Pagganuci '53 of New York, Laurence F. Gardner '57 of Littleton, N.H., and Owen M. Johnson Jr. '58 of Manchester, N.H.
