By the time that you read these notes, it will be the season of Mother's Day. It is appropriate that we should announce the good news that Charlie Dudley's mother has been selected as the 1963 New Hampshire Mother of the Year. Mrs. Dudley is described as embodying "all the characteristics of an honest, stalwart and forthright mother giving of herself not only to her own children but also to the many children who have come to Interlaken season after season." The congratulations of the Class go out to her.
Art Nighswander's wife, Esther, has been named to the school board in Gilford, N.H. She is a former member of the Laconia School Board.
Did somebody say that this is a man's world?
The Bennington College Alumnae Association has announced that "Mrs. Mary I. Bunting, President of Radcliffe College, and F. William Andres, trustee of Bennington College, are honorary sponsors for an evening at the piano by pianist and composer Lionel Nowak." Sounds like a far cry from the Athletic Council, but it just goes to show that Dartmouth turns out wellrounded men.
Miss Susan Catherine Smith, of Lake Forest, Ill., formerly of Dedham, Mass., a graduate of Beaver Country Day School, a student at Garland Junior College, a debutante of the 1961-1962 season and a member of the Junior League of Boston and the Vincent Club is engaged to marry Stuart Allan Finlay, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Allan Risley Finlay of Wayland and West Falmouth. Sorry we cannot share her picture.
Dr. Gordon B. Smith is another school committeeman. After 15 years of service on the Rutland, Vt., School Board, he recently ran for re-election. On a platform for more quality of teaching, Gordie should have been a shoo-in. He is a life-long resident of Rutland and has been a practicing physician there since 1933. He has been Treasurer of the Vermont Medical Society and is a past president of the medical staff of the Rutland Hospital. He and Edith have two children, Susan and Burgess.
As we were entering the Colonial Theater in Boston the other night, we bumped into Ollie Holmes who was taking a walk with his dentist. Saw Eddie Deans recently and exchanged sympathies with him about income taxes. Except for his white hair, nobody would guess that he is a grandfather of twins.
This is a trying season for everybody and most particularly for lawyers and accountants. We have been so buried that we feel completely out of touch with the current activities of our fellowmen. Just give us time and we will get back in step.
It is most heartening to see the current returns of the Alumni Fund. As of April 2, 1929 was leading the pack in the Green Derby with $11,352 contributed. Congratulations to Eddie Chinlund and his organization for such a fine running start. This took a lot of hard work and thoughtful planning. We cannot and must not let them down now. With the thrust of everybody pitching in, this should be a banner year for the proud Class of 1929.
We are sorry to learn that our beloved classmate, Fred Brelthut, passed away recently. The deep sympathy of the Class is extended to his wife, Mildred, and their family.
