Summer coming up and here's one to put us in the proper mood - An airlines stewardess, sent on her happy marital way by the airlines president with the admonition: "Good luck, and raise us a replacement," wired back a year and a half later: "Sorry, we're raising a pilot!"
George Martin, writing from their midMarch sojourn at Coral Gables, was exuberant about the arrival of a baby girl to their son George Jr. and wife, making one son and four daughters in that bailiwick, and a total for them now of 10 grandchildren. George tells of a couple good visits with the Dud Woolworths at Hialeah, with Dud "picking up a lot" on such occasions. A recent letter from Dud shows remarkable "bounce" and recovery from occasional heart blocks. Hats off to a game guy!
Sid Crawford, of Kennebunk fame, reports that Max Wilcox is feeling much better after a winter's cavorting with those bikinis down at Daytona Beach. Sid's Doris has taken up crewel-work (I had to look that one up too) and is doing right well at it. Sid says anyone who wants to strap on his skis will be welcome up their way - with swim suits as a possible alternative, come a good thaw!
Postal echoes from hither and yon: Cook Islands and Tahiti - the Wanamakers get first hand demonstration of the Hula; St. Simons Island - the Russ Rices rave about moss-covered oaks, palms, wide sandy beaches, and broad ocean; Auckland and Sydney - the Howie Fulle'rs find the historic spots interesting and the weather fine; Hanover - the Eben Cloughs say you have to see Hopkins Center to believe it; Circle I Ranch, Patagonia, Arizona - George In galls takes a couple weeks to see if he can still stay on a horse - "so far so good" says he; Washington, D. C. - George Adams, acknowledging his "plentieth" birthday, says the weather there finished in a photo finish with the annual Cherry Blossom Festival; Springfield, Mass. - Gib Campbell, taking advantage of his welcome into the "3-Score & 10" Club, went down town to claim his "free" fishing license (available in Mass. to all over 70), had a nice trip to Florida "but the citrus crop was lousy"; Trinidad - George Dyke sends greetings; and JohnnyMullin last heard from touring the Holy City but due home late in May. Thus did the wintry winds blow on some '15ers.
Lee Smith, belying his entry into said "3 Score & 10" Club, says their twins, Karen and Christopher, celebrated their fourth birthday March 21. "I suppose they can lay claim to being official class babies, as I haven't heard of any miracles since mine!" quoth Lee in all his glory.
Jack Ferguson reports Kay Mason back in Woodstock after her South Sea tour and Don Howe back in Omaha after their jaunt through the Southwest. Jack and Madelon were headed late in March for the Petro- leum Geologists Convention in Houston, curving by Shreveport on their return to see how their grandson is getting on. Jack says "He's a keeper, for sure" (which is a new one on me).
At this sitting, accommodations are all set for our Interim Reunion at the Hanover Inn for the October 4-5 weekend. Full details will be sent in due course, but make your room reservations direct with Jim McFate, Manager of the Inn.
Bob Fredericks phones in to let us know he's St on deach at Hastings-on-Hudson but glad of a slight respite in florist's supplies after the Easter rush.
The Marv Fredericks are planning a European trip after the first of the year.
Our deep sympathy goes out to Bob Bigelow in the sudden passing of his wife, Anna, late in March.
Art Nichols phones from the hospital to report the successful completion of his eye cataract operation and a couple weeks later the Phil Murdocks joined him and Charity at a very enjoyable Sunday evening dinner at the Bob Griffins' out in Tuckahoe. Art was able to manipulate victuals from plate to mouth with reasonable accuracy and experienced even less difficulty in the art of elbow-bending. What a guy!
A newcomer showed up at one of the Purcell weekly round table lunches in Boston in the person of Bush Campbell, making the quota add up to Chan Foster, DaleBarker, Eben Clough, plus Bush, with Warde Wilkins '13, George Steele '13 and Carl Shumway '13 completing the circle.
The Thornton Prays sailed April 30 from New York on the S.S. Saturnia for a leisurely European tour, scheduled to return in about two months. While this is "Pete's" first trip, his good wife Virginia is some seven years up on him in this respect, so "Pete" feels it is about time the "family average" is brought closer to equalization! They were anticipating a good visit with son Samuel and family in Paris. Happy
We are sorry to learn of Alyce Robertson's departure from the plains of Hanover. The Emma Willard School's gain is our loss. Our best wishes accompany her to her new job as head of their Fund.
And so - as we go into summer hibernation, we would fain quote this bon mot, gleaned from the extraneous reading occasioned by the late and unlamented New York news strike: "If you think my decor is attractive, you ought to see my night corps!" Ouch!
