THE Dartmouth Alumni Council has a Golden Anniversary in 1963, and this milestone in Dartmouth alumni affairs was made the highlight of the Council's annual meeting in Hanover last month.
The man who founded the Alumni Council and served as its first president in 1913 - President Emeritus Ernest Martin Hopkins '01 — was present at the Council's annual dinner in Thayer Hall on June 19. He spoke briefly, after receiving a standing ovation, and said that the founding of the Council as the "senate" of all Dartmouth alumni was possibly the contribution of greatest importance and most lasting value that he had made to the College. Mr. Hopkins, then a business executive, was the prime mover in bringing the Alumni Council into being at a meeting in Philadelphia on November 7, 1913.
The main address of the evening was given by Sidney C. Hayward '26, Secretary of the College, who has been secretary of the Council for 33 of its 50 years. He reviewed the history, objectives, organization, and achievements of the Council, and spoke especially of the diligence and spirit with which the Council's members carry on their important work. Present for the dinner were 39 of the Council's 50 members, from all parts of the country; six newly elected members who took office July 1, and 33 former members.
The substance of Mr. Hayward's address and other historical facts about the Alumni Council will appear as special feature in the next issue of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE.
At the June 21 session winding up its three-day program, the Council elected N. Page Worthington '33 of Baltimore as its president for 1963-64. Mr. Worthington, who is assistant vice president for public relations of the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company of Maryland, succeeds M. Carter Strickland '29 of Oneida, N. Y., in the presidency.
To serve as vice president the Council elected Carl H. Funke '35 of Upper Montclair, N. J., president of the Carl Funke Company in Weehawken. Sidney C. Hayward '26 of Hanover was re-elected secretary. The executive committee will consist of the three elected officers, Frank T. Kennedy '25 of Short Hills, N. J., and Henry R. Bankart Jr. '35 of New York City.
To serve as an alumni member of the Dartmouth Athletic Council for a three-year term the Council named Robert W. Gibson '39 of Minneapolis, vice president of the Toro Manufacturing Company. As representative on the Board of Overseers of the Hanover Inn it named James D. Landauer '23 of New York and as representative on the Board of Proprietors of The Dartmouth it reelected Ralph N. Hill Jr. '39 of Burlington, Vt.
The Council also elected five new members-at-large to serve three-year terms until 1966. They are: Herbert F. Darling '26 of Buffalo, N. Y., president of Herbert F. Darling Engineering Contractors; Robert L. Maclellan '28 of Chattanooga, Tenn., president of the Provident Life and Accident Insurance Company; Fred C. Scribner Jr. '3O of Portland, Me., lawyer and former Under Secretary of the U. S. Treasury; Morrison G. Tucker '32 of Oklahoma City, Okla., executive vice president of the Liberty National Bank and Trust Company; and Lawrence Marx Jr. '36 of New York City, vice president and director of United Merchants and Manufacturers.
As has been the custom in recent years, the Alumni Council's annual June meeting was held during the Reunion Week following Commencement. A reception in the President's Garden and the dinner marking the 50th anniversary opened the program on Wednesday evening. Prior to the after-dinner talks by Mr. Hopkins, Mr. Hayward, and President Dickey, Council President Carter Strickland presented Alumni Awards to Sidney J. Flanigan '23 and Donald C. McKinlay '37 (see page 27).
Thursday morning and the luncheon hour were devoted to committee meetings dealing with enrollment and admissions, the Alumni Fund, Alumni Awards, public relations, bequests and estate planning, regional alumni organization, placement, and class gifts. That afternoon the Council met in the Drake Room of Hop-kins Center to hear committee reports and discuss these areas of alumni activity, and adjourned in time for a barbecue supper at The Keenes in Etna.
Friday morning's working session featured a talk by Dean Waldo Chamberlin on "1963 Summer Programs" and President Dickey's traditional "State of the College" report to the Council. A lively discussion period followed the President's explanation of some of the major College projects and problems of the present time. Election of officers for 1963-64 and the nomination of F. William Andres '29 of Boston to serve as an Alumni Trustee of the College completed the business of the Council. It will next meet in Hanover on January 16-18, at which time it will hold a joint session with the Board of Trustees.
