The football squad did not bring the only athletes to the Dartmouth campus before the September 23 registration. Both cross-country and soccer squads reported on September 14 for some early preparation for their October 3 openers.
Track coach Ellie Noyes, still beaming about the U.S. Olympic team selection of his star sprinter Gerry Ashworth '63, has had his runners climbing hills in morning sessions and doing speed work after lunch.
The cross-country squad is captained by Lee Daneker '65 of Cranston, R.I., one of only three Dartmouth runners (Tom Laris '62 and Stan Waterman '49 were the others) to finish first against the Manhattan harriers. Another solid veteran is Caleb Loring '66 of Prides Crossing, Mass. The Green is due to host Manhattan on October 3 with Daneker seeking a repeat of last year's triumph.
Coach Whitey Burnham feels that his soccer team will be improved over last year's. "We finished strong in '63 with three straight victories and I think the team still has that winning impetus," he explained.
He also has Captain Ron Knapp, last year's high scorer, plus the six juniors - Hank Amon, Pete Barber, Bill Duval, Larry Geiger, Tim Paige, and Bruce Petrie - who started every game during their sophomore season. Promising rookies include John Meek Jr., son of the College vice-president and treasurer, Edmund (Chip) Harvey, Grant Monahon, Chris Nevison and Bill Smoyer. The last-named is the younger brother of Dave Smoyer '63 who was an All-American soccer goalie. Burnham understandably hopes there is a strong family resemblance.
