The Dartmouth rugby team (or rugby football team) opened its spring schedule April 16 against a strong Montreal Club on the Clark School field. Dartmouth reversed a loss last fall to Montreal by winning this game 14-0 to give a record of four wins, one loss and one tie for the season so far. Fullback Mert Mertis was outstanding for the Indians, with his fine kicking setting up the tallies. The team meets Princeton at Northampton next.

The Big Green scrum for the opener consisted of veteran Mac Barker and Wayne Kakela at the posts with Tom Burris in the hooker slot. Ed Ross and Captain Bob Woodberry were on the second row.

Rounding out the eight-man forward line were wing forwards George Krosnowski, Jack Crowley and Don Saunders. Tex Levy was at the scrum half post and Dave McLaughlin at stand off. Barry Stompe and Harry Ambrose played at center with Tony Bruscino and Bob Downey on the wing posts to complete the team.

The Dartmouth rugby team did well in the Bermuda Tournament during spring vacation, winning two and tying one contest before bowing to Harvard in the finals 9-0. Dartmouth outclassed a British Army Team 11-0 in the opener, then battled Yale to a scoreless tie in a second game. Meeting Yale a day later, the Indians won by a 6-0 score.

A relatively new sport at Dartmouth and not financed by the DCAC, the rugby team is growing and attracting considerable student interest. The hardest part of the game seems to be understanding its technicalities, but once that is mastered you can sit back and enjoy this Ivy League version of spring football practice.
