Two of our academics won quick promotions this fall soon after starting their jobs. Jere Daniell, back in Hanover with the history department, stepped up quickly from instructor to associate professor. He received his Ph.D. from Harvard in June, specializing in colonial history. Newell Stultz received the same advancement at Northwestern University, where he's teaching political science and African studies. Newell has completed his requirements for a Ph.D. in African studies from Boston University, and will receive the degree next year.
Also in the scholarly world, Morris Yarowsky completed a Master of Fine Arts degree, in painting, at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland.
The New York Stock Exchange now permits non-New York firms to have direct telephone lines from their offices to the exchange floor, and Tom Roulston's Roulston & Co., in Cleveland, announced in October that it was opening the first such line from an investment firm in northern Ohio. The Cleveland Plain Dealer stated: "The direct telephone line will speed greatly the time it takes to execute orders on the exchange, according to President Thomas H. Roulston." Dick Steck '31, a Cleveland lawyer, reports that "Tom has been very successful in the securities business and is one of the local experts on insurance company stocks."
Among our fighting forces, Army Capt. John Lewis moved from Fort Sill, Okla., to Fort Bliss, Texas. John Dinan and Bob Waugh are Navy doctors in South Freeport, Me., and New Britain, Conn. Lt. Tom Fleming is at the Naval Air Station at Corpus Christi, Texas.
Other medicine men: Ed Call is associated with Yale. Jack Bryan is in Roanoke, Va.. and Ralph Blount is in Auburn, Calif. Ray Lenhard is a fellow in medicine at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. Joe Hick is back home in Delta, Colo. Jon Malev is in Syracuse and Dan Nixon in Rockville Centre, Long Island. Veterinarian Harry Millar is in Eatontown, N. J.
Charlie Greenebaum, vice president and general manager of the Rent A Car Division of The Hertz Corp., attended the annual convention of the American Society of Travel Agents, held in Miami Beach in October. There he consulted with Bill Kofoed who's with Hank Meyer Associates, Inc., in Miami Beach and is Hertz' public relations account executive in Florida. Bill wrote that the convention produced a picture of Charlie "and a lovely hostess in bathing suit yet," but the only photo of Charlie that Hertz could provide later was one in a very dark business suit - sans hostess.
Bill also reported that he's written articles for Compressed Air Magazine, two Swiss magazines, the U. S. Travel Service and Studebaker's house organ. Also, he went to Guatemala in November to cover a travel convention for Travel Trade Magazine.
In addition, Bill relayed word that Dick Bueschel is still with Honeywell in Boston, and that the Rev. Roy Nyren has moved from Denver to a church in Milwaukee. Bill said that Roy, "who has always been a teetotaler, laughingly suggests that he might have to learn to drink beer."
Stan Bergman became engaged to Lillian Pollack of Philadelphia. She attended New York University. Stan, who's both a lawyer and a certified public accountant, plies his trade in New Haven. Jake Stewart made wedding plans with Priscilla Alden of Lancaster, N. H. She's a graduate of the Mary Fletcher Hospital School of Nursing in Burlington, Vt., where Jake works.
Pete Fishbein left his high-level post in the Peace Corp's international secretariat, which assists other countries in setting up their own peace corps, and returned to law practice in New York. He lives in Scarsdale. Dick Fairley is back in Washington as a civil defense program specialist in the Office of Education, Department of Health, Education and Welfare. Jay Hogan is a recreation resource specialist for the Interior Department in Lakewood, Colo.
Ernie Arnold now lives in Morton, Ill., and has been promoted to Illinois district sales manager for Scott Paper Co. Paul Sweetnam is with Sayford Corp., a paper company, in Litchfield, Conn. Associate Professor Harry Guenther teaches finance at Georgetown University in Washington, commuting across the Potomac from Annandale, Va. Hi Allman lives in Doylestown, Pa., and sells real estate for Feist & Feist
Two classmates shouldered important United Fund jobs this fall. George McGregor headed the central retail division of the Haverhill, Mass., drive. He's with the James Page Insurance Agency and has worked for the United Fund previously in other capacities. George also is in charge of the religious education program at the Universalist-Unitarian Church. Bob Horton, assistant trust officer at the Connecticut National Bank in Waterbury, Conn., was responsible for coordinating more than 200 volunteers seeking both individual and firm gifts from the 162 Waterbury-area firms employing from 10 to 25 persons each. Bob, who lives in Watertown, is also secretary of the Watertown Junior Chamber of Commerce and chairman of the music committee and choir of the Watertown First Congregational Church.
