Air Force Major Bill Gavitt was named commander of the two-man crew representing Ellsworth Air Force Base in the Strategic Air Command's annual missile combat competition. According to The Black Hills Sentinel, Ellsworth's base newspaper, both Bill and his partner "are pursuing the Minuteman Education Program sponsored by the Air Force Institute of Technology and conducted by South Dakota State University, leading to a master's degree with majors in economics and minors in military management." The paper quotes the base deputy commander as saying, "Both crew members epitomize the professional officer. They are exceptionally intelligent, sharp in appearance and in presentations, expert in communicative skills and strong and deci leaders."

Also furthering his education in South Dakota, but civilian style: Lou Turner, who received a master's degree in physics from the University of South Dakota in August.

Complimentary words in the Dover (N. J.). Advance for Neale Clapp. He is an expert on juvenile delinquency and rehabilitation, and is director of training at the Center for Study of the Unemployed in the Graduate School of Social Work at New York University. Neale, his wife Sandra and their three children live in Morristown, N. J., and he's now devoting part of his time to setting up a new program of "guided group interaction" for the Morris County Probation Department, according to the Advance. The paper lists his past experience in great detail, and comments that the department "is fortunate in finding a man of this stature ... as a prime mover in bringing to reality the updating of the department to what it should be today."

Bob Garver moved from the Continental Illinois Bank in Chicago, where he was a second vice president, to the Charlestown Savings Bank in Boston, which bills itself as the third largest savings bank in Massachusetts. Bob is a vice president and assistant to the president. He, his wife Judy and three girls live in Wayland, at 8 Wayside Road.

Another banker, Swifty Lawrence, was elected a vice president of Citizens Savings in Providence, on top of his post as secretary of Allied Citizens Trust Company.

Mike Buck moved from Flick Reedy Corp. to the Minneapolis investment banking firm of Dain, Kalman & Quail, Inc. Mike went through a six-month training course to become a registered representative, qualified to sell stocks, bonds, and mutual funds. He still lives in the Minneapolis suburb of Edina, where he's been a vice president of the Jaycees and president of Toastmasters Club #814.He's presently associate area governor of the Western Suburbs Toastmasters.

Ross Eilis, who's in charge of personnel in Inland Steel's headquarters building in Chicago, was elected secretary of the Industrial Relations Association of Chicago. DickGardner does chemical research for Standard Brands Chemical Industries, Inc., in Dover, Del.

Hugh Brady moved up to vice president of his family's wholesale pet supply business in Dover, Mass. He's also active in Kiwanis, and in canoeing on the Charles.

Gordie Russell reports that "all is well in Boston. Fred and Molly Pessl produced #1 son Mark a few weeks ago. Dave Conlanand Jane are celebrating their first anniversary. Mount is in great shape for the Marathon - Laris had better watch out."

Steve Schmieder says so many '55s are now in California that "we will probably have to charter a train to come back to the reunion in 1970." Frank Downey is programming for John Hancock Mutual Life in Boston. John Bassette moved from Hartford to Sewickley, Pa., still with PPG Industries as a market research analyst. LieutenantCommander Al Brookes shifted his colors from Groton, Conn., to Annapolis. Another Navy man, Dr. Dick Flagg, also a lieutenant commander now, relocated to the "U.S.S. Enterprise" on the West Coast.

Mark Zimmerman is with the Peace Corps in Teheran, following a tour in India. Ev Johnson is vice president and director of the fragrance sales division of Fritzsche Brothers, Inc., in New York; he commutes from Chappaqua. Tony Kreulen,' continuing his unusual insurance career in the Far East, is now with Home Insurance in Bangkok. Will Stratton has formed his own law partnership in Washington, Clarke & Stratton. TomJones is an associate with Booz, Allen & Hamilton International in London. Geologist Geoff Snow shifted from Dow Chemical in California to Climax Molybdenum in Dillon, Colo. Lieut. Steve Davis is Naval liaison officer with the Canadians at Shelburne, Nova Scotia.

Your correspondent left CBS television in July and spent the fall political season flying and bussing around Illinois with the Republican candidate for governor, Richard Ogilvie, as his press secretary.
