The College has recently received $215,509 in bequests from the estates of four alumni: John French '86, Arthur J. Sporborg '09, Henry S. Embree '30, and Peter B. Evans '3l. With these four bequests the first quarter of the fiscal year shows a total realization to Dartmouth from bequests of $346,047.
The French bequest of $40,368 has been used to establish the John French 1886 Memorial Scholarship Fund. Mr. French, a New York lawyer, died in 1935. He had established a trust with Dartmouth as the final beneficiary.
The Arthur J. Sporborg 1909 Fund of $25,141 has been established with income to be credited annually to the Class of 1909 Alumni Fund campaign. Mr. Sporborg, a Florida realtor, had been active in class and alumni club affairs.
From the estate of Henry S. Embree '30 the College received an unrestricted $50,000 bequest and with it established the Henry S. Embree 1930 Memorial Fund which now functions as an endowment fund. Mr. Embree, a Chicago businessman, was for many years a class and club officer, a leader in the Capital Gifts Campaign, and a member of the Dartmouth Alumni Council.
$100,000 has been received from the estate of Peter B. Evans '31 as an initial payment on his bequest with further realization to come. The Peter B. Evans 1931 Memorial Fund has been established, under Funds Functioning as Endowment, and for the present income will be used for the purchase of books for the Baker Library. Each book purchased will carry a distinctive bookplate memorializing Mr. Evans. A scientist who for 26 years was with E. I. DuPont Corp. (and during World War II with the Manhattan Project that produced the atomic bomb), Mr. Evans had been treasurer of his class and an assistant class agent.
