THOMAS W. BRADEN '40, now serving his second term (1963-67) on the California State Board of Education, has been president of the Board since 1961. He was in the national news last year when his reappointment by Governor Brown was unsuccessfully opposed by some of California's right-wing, groups, and again when he spearheaded the move to upgrade the state's teacher certification requirements, calling for more college preparation in the subject to be taught and less training in the methodology of teaching. His article for the ALUMNI MAGAZINE deals with this educational reform effort.

Mr. Braden, the nominee of the Dartmouth Alumni Council, was elected to a first five-year term as an Alumni Trustee of Dartmouth College at the October meeting of the Trustees. For the past ten years he has resided in Oceanside, California, where he is editor and publisher of The Daily Blade-Tribune. A native of Dubuque, lowa, he served with the British and U.S. Armies from 1941 to 1945 and returned to Dartmouth in 1946 to teach English and serve as assistant to President Dickey. He worked in New York for three years, 1948-51, and then served as assistant to Allen W. Dulles, director of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, 1951-54, before purchasing The Daily Blade-Tribune.

Mr. Braden has good reason to be interested in the public schools of California. He is the father of five daughters and three sons, the oldest of whom is 14.
