JAMES F. ROOT (above, right, with Coach Bob Blackman) is the new backfield coach on Dartmouth's varsity football staff. The 32-year-old Root, who was quarterback with the Chicago Cardinals a decade ago and coach of All-American quarterback George Mira at Miami (Florida) the past four years, is taking the place of Will Volz who has resigned after ten years on Blackman's staff to become Dartmouth's Assistant Director of Physical Education, a newly created post under Director Seaver Peters '54.
Root, who was a star T-quarterback at Miami of Ohio in the early 'sos, played two years for Coach Woody Hayes, now at Ohio State, and two years for Ara Parseghian, now at Notre Dame. One of his backfield mates was John Pont, head coach at Yale. Root went from Tulane to Miami and there had primary responsibility for offense under Coach Andy Gustafson, former Dartmouth assistant coach under Earl Blaik.
