DARTMOUTH IN JAPAN
APRIL 1964

As chairman of the nineteen-man delegation from this country, President Dickey late last month flew to Japan for the second half of the "home and home" Dartmouth Conference on Japanese-American Relations which had its first session in Hanover in October 1962.

The conference, sponsored jointly by the College and International House of Japan and supported by The Ford Foundation, is taking place in the city of Kurashiki, Okayama Prefecture, from March 29 to April 5. As was true of the gathering at Dartmouth, the meeting in Japan will bring together private citizens of both countries who are prominent in academic, cultural, and business life for the free and full discussion of a variety of issues of mutual concern.

"We all feel that this type of non- official confrontation of Japanese and American points of view is of the greatest importance for the future relations of our two countries," President Dickey said. "The purpose of the discussions is not to arrive at agreement, but rather to reach a deeper understanding of each other's point of view."

One of the American business leaders attending the conference is Ralph Lazarus '35, president of Federated Department Stores. Faculty members from Columbia, Harvard, Yale, and M.I.T. are in the American party, which also includes Theodore H. White, John Fischer of Harper's, and Leo Rosten of Look.

Mrs. Dickey is accompanying President Dickey to Japan, and at the conclusion of the conference they will remain in Japan for an additional week, returning to Hanover about April 15, according to present plans. During this post-conference period President and Mrs. Dickey will be guests of honor at a dinner meeting of the Dartmouth Club of Tokyo on April 9. They will stop off in Honolulu for a luncheon meeting with the alumni there on April 12.
