Over 180 alumni and their wives gathered to hear John Sloan Dickey at Washington's new Madison Hotel on March 2. The vigor of Dartmouth in political life was amply demonstrated by the bevy of Congressmen who attended, perhaps not only once again to associate closely with the college, but also to ensure themselves of the Dartmouth vote among their constituents. President Dickey spoke eloquently and in some detail about three of Dartmouth's recent innovations: the summer school, ABC (A Better Chance) program, and the Alumni College. He was ably preceded by Alumni Fund Chairman Charles F. Moore Jr. '25, whose son Jon '54, incidentally, is in charge of our Northern Virginia Enrollment effort. It is a pleasure to report the general observation that there was a rapport between speakers and audience which attested to the vitality of the Dartmouth fellowship and the warm respect felt for the President of our College. At the conclusion of the dinner, President Dickey was presented with a check for $2500, representing the latest increment to our growing Club Scholarship Fund.
A large number of the assembled alumni remained afterwards to view the Washington premier of the College's new film strip, "Dartmouth Today." Audience reaction was favorable and the Enrollment Committee will soon be showing it to student groups throughout the area.
On the third Thursday of each month, barring complications, a luncheon speaker is scheduled from among our large group of alumni holding interesting and responsible positions both in public and private life. Luncheons are held at 12:30 (12:00 for the cocktailers) at the Touchdown Club, 1414 Eye Street in downtown Washington. Thus far during 1964 we have heard from Bernard Nossiter '47, Economic Correspondent for the Washington Post, who explored "The Economics of the Johnson Administration," and from Representative Clark MacGregor'44 who addressed himself to the intriguing question "Should We Abolish Congress?" While we still have mixed feelings about the Congress and the economics of the Johnson administration, there are no doubts about the quality of our speakers or the insights they brought to us about their chosen subjects.
