JUNE 1964

Stewart Sanders '56 (1) received a top honor at the annual meeting of the Dartmouth class officers in Hanover last month when he was saluted as the Class Secretary of the Year. Sidney C. Hayward '26, Secretary of the College, made the award with the following citation:

No undergraduate in recent years has made a finer record than you in respect to all-around activity as a leader in student government at Dartmouth, as a scholar in science, as a top officer of the Outing Club, a leader in the Interfraternity and the Undergraduate Councils, and other valued campus activities.

On the famous visit of President Eisenhower to the Dartmouth College Grant on June 25, 1955, you represented the student body, you helped feed the throng of Senators, Governors, Congressmen, reporters, and photographers that converged on our lovely wilderness area, and you presented Ike with an Honorary Life Membership in the Dartmouth Outing Club. General Eisenhower and all the rest of us loved every minute of that memorable occasion in which you participated and contributed so much.

You have an innate instinct for doing the right thing at the right time - like coming back to Hanover following two years of active ROTC duty in the Navy, when you served as Assistant to the Dean of the College, and then decided to go forward with your desire to become a minister and are now a student at Harvard Divinity School; and like the way you agreed to serve as secretary of your class and have done such a superb job that the honors we pay you today are richly deserved.

Son of a Harvard man, yourself now a true son of Dartmouth, we are delighted to name you Dartmouth Class Secretary of the Year.
