Another Record For the Fund
OCTOBER 1965

NEW records in both contributors and dollars marked the 51st Dartmouth Alumni Fund campaign which concluded on June 30. Starting the second halfcentury of Fund activity, after an unusually successful 50th .anniversary campaign in 1964, the Fund came within 1% of reaching its ambitious $1,800,000 goal by raising $1,780,152 from 22,465 alumni, parents, and friends. This represented a gain of $155,342 and 28 contributors over 1964.

Many classes shared in the recordsetting performance. Forty classes achieved new dollar totals and 31 classes attained 100% participation or better. Two classes surpassed the $60,000 mark for the first time in history. The Class of 1925, led by Laurence G. Leavitt, set an all-time record on its 40th reunion by contributing $63,412 and thereby retained the Davis Trophy. The 25th reunion class, 1940, under the leadership of Hugh Schwarz and Robert H. Lake, was only $5 behind with $63,407. Four other classes—1915, 1927, 1926 and 1931 - surpassed $50,000 each.

On the participation side, few classes were able to exceed their records of the previous year, but 1953, headed by Edward M. Condit Jr., did break an all-time fund record by having 579 contributors.

The winning classes in the closely contested Green Derby competitions were: Group I - 1905, Roger Brown, Head Agent; Group II - 1915, Harold Lounsberry; Group III - 1925, Laurence Leavitt; Group IV — 1931, Sherwood Guernsey; Group V - 1942, Warren Kreter; Group VI - 1950, John Dwyer; Group VII — 1953, Edward Condit; and Group VIII — 1958, Herb Swarzman.

Parents Fund Chairman Ellison L. Hazard of Darien, Conn., and his committee of some 100 members raised $56,072 from 1403 parents of undergraduates and graduates, an increase of better than 10% over last year.

Serving as chairman of the 1965 campaign was Rupert C. Thompson Jr. '28, Chairman of the Board of Textron, Inc. of Providence, R. I. Mr. Thompson will also be Fund Chairman of the 1966 drive. Some 3700 other Dartmouth men, 12% of the total alumni body, served as volunteer workers.

In a message to Alumni Fund workers this past summer President Dickey wrote in part: "The time is at hand to thank each of you for the indispensable part you played in once again making the sons, parents and friends of this College the reality we proudly call 'the Dartmouth family.'... I have no more meaningful way of expressing gratitude to you than to say on behalf of all of us to whom the use of these dollars is entrusted that we will continue to do our best to keep the College worthy of what you ask and receive in Dartmouth's name."
