Pea-Green Freshmen
OCTOBER 1965

The Class of 1969, 795 strong, formally entered the life of the College on September 16. After a Green Key reception on Baker Library lawn, where freshmen and parents met with freshman-year faculty advisers, the newest Dartmouth class plunged into a full schedule of class meetings, conferences, rallies, library tours, and individual matriculation by President Dickey and also into those unscheduled assignments, determined by sharp-eyed, early-returning upperclass-men, that included rug beating, furniture hauling, and assorted odd jobs so important in providing comfort and aesthetic delight, and status, for the upperclass-men.

Even as the freshmen were learning more about Dartmouth - and the College was discovering more about this class selected from more than 4700 applicants - they were learning about each other, for the Green Book 1969 with photographs and biographies was ready and waiting for them. For the second year the Green Book editors, headed this year by Ernest Foss III '67 of Wyncote, Pa., had worked in late spring and summer in cooperation with the Freshman Office to assure publication of this book when needed most.

These 795 men from 48 states and many foreign lands, coming from almost every stratum of American life and bringing with them talents of great diversity, were fully part of the Dartmouth community and firmly identified as " '69" when Convocation arrived on September 23. The President's address, "The Conscience of Liberal Learning," will be printed in the November ALUMNI MAGAZINE.
