Tuition Increase
NOVEMBER 1965

The Trustees have au- thorized an increase of $125 in the comprehensive tuition charge, beginning next September, and a further increase of $150 to take effect in 1967-68. The Medical School, Thayer School, and Tuck School will have corresponding tuition increases.

The official announcement of the increase noted that the new charges "reflect the College's commitment to the maintenance of a faculty and educational facilities of first-rate quality." Necessities which compel this tuition rise, the announcement noted, are shared by sister institutions who either have already announced or are now planning similar increases.

Last spring a policy of "unrestricted second helpings" was instituted at Thayer dining hall on the understanding that board charges would be adjusted sometime this year to cover the extra cost. This adjustment, it now appears, will not exceed $25 annually, and it will not be put into effect before next April. There will be no changes in average dormitory room rates next year.

In terms of basic costs - tuition, board, and room - Dartmouth's charges will be within range of the other private institutions with which the College is normally associated. Provision will be made in extended scholarships, loans, and employment for students now on financial aid, others who cannot meet the increased cost, and recipients of financial aid in the incoming classes.
