DECEMBER 1965 C. AKIN GARDNER '23

Twenty-six men were present at our fall meeting held at the Cotillion Room in Taunton on October 18, 1965. President GilbertE. Stokes '41 called the meeting to order after a fine roast beef dinner.

He then had the sad duty of announcing the death of our Secretary-Treasurer, Francis V.Doherty '30, on October 9, 1965 of a cerebral hemorrhage. He told how interested Frank had been in his new position (he was elected at our previous meeting) and he called for a moment of silence in tribute.

President Stokes next reported that C.Gardner Akin Jr. '23 had agreed to serve as temporary secretary-treasurer and it was voted that he serve until a replacement could be found.

He next reported he had appointed Robert E. Leary '49 to be chairman of the nominating committee to bring in a slate of officers for our annual meeting next spring.

Our speaker was Dr. Gordon D. Stokes'40, brother of our president and Chief of Medicine at the Truesdale Hospital in Fall River, Mass. His subject, strangely enough, was "A Physician Looks At Death" and he made a very frank and interesting talk on a subject we all have to come in contact with but often do not like to face up to. He said that in most cases it is right for a doctor to tell a patient he is dying. He believes that telling the truth to a patient pays off and he slips away in a calm frame of mind. As one of our other doctor members, Raymond H. Baxter '17, put it, "Dr. Stokes handled the subject extremely well."
