Harold L. Niles '07 received a top honor at the annual meeting of Dartmouth class officers in Hanover last month when he was singled out as the Class Treasurer of the Year. He received a copy of the new Dartmouth history, "College on the Hill," and was cited as follows:
In the 1907 class notes thirty years ago an item about you began, "Bishop Niles is the answer to a class secretary's prayer." Over the years you have been the answer to many things in business, home community, and your College - and, specifically bearing upon this award, since 1961 you have been the answer to the need of a good man in the job of class treasurer.
Your statistical credentials this year are firstrate. The percentage of 'O7 men paying class dues stands at 83%, including 92% of graduates and 62% of non-graduates. You maintain an ALUMNI MAGAZINE circulation of 97% of the entire class and also finance subscriptions for nearly 40 widows. Sound finances permit a memorial gift program benefiting the College. The management of 1907 finances is no strain
The management of 1907 finances is no strain for one who before retirement was president of New England's largest apartment management firm. Your son, Louville F. Niles, Dartmouth '35, suceeded you in that post. Among many civic and charitable services you have been a board member for Boston's Children's Hospital, chairman of the Board of Selectmen in Wellesley, where you have lived for more than 50 years; a founder and first president of the Unitarian Laymen's League, and chairman of various fund-raising campaigns.
Dartmouth has always been in the forefront of your interest and good works. And although service for 1907 is the immediate focus, there are a multitude of reasons for our delight in saluting you as Dartmouth Class Treasurer of the Year.
