William M. Alley '21 was honored at the annual meeting of Dartmouth class officers in Hanover last month when he received the Fred A. Howland Trophy as the outstanding Head Agent of a class more than 40 years out of Dartmouth in last year's Alumni Fund campaign. Fund Chairman Rupert C. Thompson Jr. '28 made the award and cited Mr. Alley as follows:

It is most appropriate that the first award of this trophy, named for the first Chairman of the Dartmouth Alumni Fund, be presented to you. Your leadership of 1921 dates back to 1958, and during this period you have produced four Green Derby wins for your class, increasing your class' annual contributions from the $25,000 level to over $40,000 despite a dwindling class membership. Your special efforts in securing major gifts has made 1921 a leader among all classes in the number of donors of gifts at the $1,000 and up level. We particularly commend the personal and voluminous correspondence you have carried on with your fine team of Class Agents and with almost all of your classmates. You have always been eager to share your know-how with other Head Agents, and the 1921 Campaign programs have been widely emulated by contemporary classes. Not many men would give up an important post in New York to move to Hanover and devote full time to the Alumni Fund, but you did exactly that. The Fund Committee is indeed delighted to honor both you and your class of 1921 by presenting you today with this first annual Fred A. Howland Award as the outstanding Head Agent of a class more than forty years out of Dartmouth for the 1964 Fund Campaign.
