By the time you read this the sting will but a sad memory, but on this morning after the afternoon before there surely must be many sober-sided Indians. But for a two point pass attempt which glanced off the rain soaked fingers of an eager receiver, the longest major college football winning streak would still be intact. Biggest consolation, of course, is that Holy Cross is not a league game and we have not at all jeopardized our position as odds on favorites to repeat as Ivy League champs.

Mother and I expect to be in Hanover for the class fall weekend and the Brown game in two weeks, so if the team isn't on the rebound by then I may bring my three boys along to bug the Bruin bench or else spend Saturday afternoon helping them tear down the Hanover Inn. Yes, you heard right. The walls of the main part are at long last tumbling down. Maybe some of you saw the write-up in the New York Times on Sunday, August 14. The third structure to occupy the corner since 1782 is being replaced by a new wing with 56 guest rooms, but the traditional porch with its rocking chairs will still be retained. Reservations will be in order for the fall of 1967.

The guest list of the exclusive Mountain Lakes Country Club of Lake Wales, Fla., registers our Newsletter Editor Bud Hughes and his wife Lois as well as Ellie and JayUrstadt this past Florida season. The manager added a few choice comments of his own about Jaybo's penchant for disturbing the pet alligators with his magnificent short game off the tee. Bud claims that Urstadt was the only one in the foursome who swore he saw pink alligators on the putting green before each round and thus had a legitimate excuse for missing the three-foot knee knockers.

John has worked his way up through the organization as advertising assistant, manager of product planning, production, and services. John and his wife Paula have three children.

Jim Zafris has been appointed assistant treasurer of the Arlington Trust Company of Lawrence, Mass. He spent over six years in the Central Intelligence Agency which should be a splendid background for the banking business and then spent the next seven with the First National Bank of Boston as branch manager and loaning officer in charge of the Back Bay and Allston offices. A member of the Groveland Finance Committee, he is married to the former Joyce Leonard of Beverly. She raises their three children and also finds time to teach.

From Baltimore comes word that Mat Fenton is the new president of the Chesapeake Cadillac Company, one of the largest factory authorized dealers in the East. He has been associated with the company for the past twelve years. Smooth riding to the Fenton clan from all of us!

Marsh has been very active in Grand Rapids business and community circles as president of the Lions Club, secretary of the Cascade Business Men's Association, Sunday School teacher, and member of the Masons. Our white water canoe expert and college admissions officer, Jay Evans, was very busy over the early summer directing a White Water Slalom Clinic in Andover, Me. Top prospects are scheduled to go to the World White Water Championships in Czechoslovakia next summer.

Ed Nickerson, a teacher at Emma Willard School, Troy, N. Y., received the degree of Master of Arts in Liberal Studies at Wesleyan University's commencement in June. A fellow classmate Joe LeBlanc, head master at Short Hills Country Day School, Short Hills, N. J., also received the same diploma on the same occasion.

Thomas Slade Gorton has gone and done it. He tied the nuptial knot with Joan Linnell of Boston on August 6 last. I have a photo of the young lady before me, and she is most attractive. Slade is partner in a law firm in Seattle and has been a Republican member of the state legislature since 1959. All our best wishes to the newlyweds.

If you're ever in need of lodging in a strange city you now have a real live name to throw around. Tell the most arrogant front desk man that you are a friend of Dave Cotton and if he isn't visibly impressed write him off as a rank imbecile in the world of hostelry. Dave has just been given the post of director of lodging operations for the nationwide Congress Inns organization.

Now suppose you are traveling beyond the continental reaches through the Caribbean. You are about to leave the Virgin Islands on the last leg of your trip, and you have put off the purchase of gifts for the home folk either because you are a notorious procrastinator or more likely a nearly broke turista. Drop by the Ports o' Call gift shop in Frederiksted which features unusual items from the many farflung places the owner has known. Yell "Forty Nine, Out" to the round man in the straw sandals and chances are he may pop his money belt. He may even give you a good deal on a Japanese camera or a pine scented pillow. His name should be Jack Barr. After sampling the Greek Islands, Hong Kong, Beirut, and Rome, he has found the islands to be irresistible. In addition to the gift shop, he operates a patiotype restaurant which is perhaps the only one of its kind in the world sporting Persian rugs under tropical stars. At last, a place to sweep that sand.
