When Monte Basbas won the election as mayor of Newton, Mass., it created quite a stir of publicity in the Boston papers. Among the many interesting things about his election is that he never had run for an elective office before. Monte is a Republican and for the first time in the history of Newton, there were more registered Democrats than GOP faithful. Notwithstanding, Monte won by a landslide victory margin of 20,165 votes to 11,640, carrying every ward in 34 of the city's 36 precincts. He went all-out in his campaign, attending more than 200 house parties and speaking to every organization that could muster a microphone or a rostrum.
Don Hinkley has been elected to the newly created post of Executive Vice President 0f Emery Indus- tries, Inc., of Cincinnati, Ohio. Don was most recently a managing partner in Italmarket, a European common marketing consulting firm in Rome, Italy. Before that he was Vice President of Pepsi-Cola International in charge of Europe and North and West Africa. Prior to joining the Pepsi-Cola organization, Don spent sixteen years with Procter and Gamble, first in Cincinnati and later in Europe.
Consolidated Cigar Corporation apparently recognizes Phil Penberthy's repertoire of talents as we do and has just elected him a vice president. The next time you "pick one up and smoke it sometime," you can think of Phil.
In the world of finance, Walter Burke has been elected a director of the Fairchild Hiller Corporation.
Don Sheridan has just been named president of L. J. Sheridan & Company, one of the country's largest real estate and management organizations. They manage many large downtown and suburban office buildings in Chicago, Milwaukee, Los Angeles, and other major cities. They have also developed and leased a large number of major shopping centers around Chicago and throughout the country.
Don joined the firm in 1946 after returning from service as a fighter pilot in China. He became executive vice president in 1949. Earlier this year he was elected second vice president of the Chicago Real Estate Board and is past president of the Junior Real Estate Board of Chicago. He is also vice president and director of the Building Managers Association of Chicago and Chairman of the Policy Committee of the National Association of Building Owners and Managers.
In civic affairs, Don has been active in the March of Dimes and is presently serving as a Director of the Executive Committee of the Cook County Chapter of the National Foundation. He is also a director of the Catholic Charities and Trustee of the Maryville Academy in Des Plaines, Ill.
Banker Dave Patterson was a delegate from Dartmouth at the inauguration of George Dearing as President of the State University of New York at Binghamton in September.
Art Kiendl, headmaster at Mount Hermon School, has been reelected to the board of trustees of the New Hampton School. Art is now a member of the commission on public education created this year by the Charles F. Kettering Foundation.
It appears as though the U.S. looked a little too good for Don and Lela Hinckley and they are now back here for good. Don was just named to the newly-created position of executive vice president of Emery Industries, one of the nation's leading chemical firms, here in Cincinnati.
Al Rowland was in Washington recently and spent some time with Clark MacGregor who, he said, looked just wonderful. He didn't get to see Max Edwards, but understands that Max is "The Great Society." On the other hand, Clark was holding up the Republican end as fervently.
The big news with the Dick Ostbergs is that their eldest son, Rick, has been accepted at Dartmouth which brought great joy to all. In addition to his skiing, tennis, football, and camping activities, and his continued efforts at Sylvania, Dick is now completing his third year as school committeeman.
Speaking of school boards, Teeny Riggs ran for his board last May and won. Now that he has got his first taste of politics, he has got his eyes on bigger things. Marilyn has got the fever also and has taken on a lot of extracurricular activities on her own.
I imagine you all had a good time on New Year's, watching the undefeated - untied Michigan State, Nebraska, and Arkansas teams go down the drain, leaving you know who was the major undefeated, untied football team in the nation.
