I have yet to speak with or hear from any man in the Class who has not already made plans to be in Hanover for the 25th next June. Looks like it will be a full house! Don't forget to send in a picture of yourself to Fritz Hier for his reunion yearbook.
Howie Pennington kindly sent in his "bidecade" letter and told of some interesting get-togethers with various '44's, such as Bud Park and his co-author wife Dorcas who were vacationing in Arcadia, Calif. The Parks have another novel under way. They and their daughters were completing a West Coast vacation and were heading home via Las Vegas. Howie also got together with Buzz Beattie and his family in June and reports that the Beatties' art collection is now greater than ever.
He also recently had luncheon with DonConies at The Franciscan on the Wharf; with Joe McDevitt, Arn Sanders, and LeeFisher at the Blackman banquet, and KirkBassett at the Dartmouth luncheon at the Iron Horse on Maiden Lane. Howie is active in the Dartmouth Club out there and has been picked to head up Dartmouth Night for the San Francisco Bay Area on Friday evening, October 11. It sounds as though he has got a good program lined up so any of you residents or visitors in the Bay Area can plan on a pleasant evening.
Howie has been managing sales in the eleven western states for Pepperell. Now that his company has merged with West Point, he'll be associated with Ted Brush.
Bob Laidlaw has taken over the presidency of the Laidlaw Brothers Division of Doubleday & Co., publishers, following the promotion of his brother John '34 to a vice presidency of Doubleday. Bob joined Laidlaw Brothers, publishers of textbooks, in 1950 after receiving his law degree at the University of North Carolina. In 1960 he was elected executive vice president of Laidlaw. Bob holds a membership in the Illinois Bar Association and serves as a trustee of Shimer College. He and his wife and three children live in La Grange, Illinois.
I guess Stan Zarod couldn't face an election year without a political fight. He's coming out of retirement to challenge his successor in the Massachusetts Senate for the seat he vacated in '66. The last few years Stan has been permanent staff director of the Interstate Cooperation Commission.
Jim Browning's old company, Thermo-Dynamics Corp., just completed a new 16,000 sq. ft. plant to replace the one that was destroyed by fire earlier in the year. The building was dedicated to James A. Browning and at the ceremonies, they unveiled a rather handsome portrait of the founder. Jim is still consultant to Thermo-Dynamics, but is concentrating his efforts at Browning Engineering Corp. on the development of internal burners for rock drilling.
Jack Riley, hockey coach at West Point, has been named a member of the Hockey Committee of the U. S. Collegiate Sports Council. Dr. Charles Regan has been promoted to associate surgeon in ophthalmology at the Mass. Eye and Ear Infirmary. He's also an instructor at Harvard Medical School. Jerry Brody's daughter Kathryn was married in Kansas City last spring.
In the field of medicine, Frank Ebaugh, Dean of Boston University School of Medicine, appears to be the spokesman in the campaign to find funds needed to keep the City Hospital operating. There had been talk of having it closed because of financial problems. Dr. Frank Behrle has been named by the American Academy of Pediatrics to evaluate the medical aspects of the Head Start Program. He's professor and chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at the New Jersey College of Medicine and Dentistry.
Out in Tucson, Ariz., Dr. Monty DeVal was named by the Department of Health, Education and Welfare to the National Advisory Council on education for health professions. Monty, as you know, is Dean of the Medical College at the University of Arizona. According to Chuck Richardson, Monty is more and more being considered one of Tucson's civic leaders and the new College of Medicine which he founded is showing greater promise by the day. Incidentally, Chuck reports that Junie Hoffman will be moving into the Tucson area before long.
Phil Penberthy and his legion of agents did another remarkable job in this year's alumni fund campaign. They hit 101% of the objective in dollars and had 70% participation. Dick Osberg was out in the San Francisco area recently and spent some time with Malcolm McLoud. Both of them will be on hand in June, as will Bruce Thomson.I saw Bud Coith recently. He got back to Hanover in June for the first time since 1943 when he took his son up for inspection and interview. Bud claims that the school looks ten times better than he ever recalled it as a student and I surmise that his son shared his enthusiasm. I also ran into Wes Shell on the golf course last weekend and understand that he'll be on board in June, although he has to fit it in between three graduation weekends scattered up and down the east coast. Don Hinkley definitely will be on hand, in fact, he's heading up there this weekend on 3rd Century Fund business.
John Lovewell is in Bangkok, Thailand, with Camp, Dresser and McKee. Phil May has settled down in Laguna Beach, Calif. Banker Vinton Mitchell now calls Buenos Aires his home.
Mike Brown's dad, Coach Paul Brown, has been doing a tremendous job with the new Cincinnati Bengals and it appears as though they will have a reasonably good season for a first-year club, but not quite as good as Mike's alma mater is supposed to have.
