Dartmouth's Alumni Fund leaders were "cautiously optimistic" as the 1966 campaign headed into the final June month toward its goal of $1,900,000. The late May totals showed $1,150,000 contributed by 13,000 alumni, parents and friends in the 52nd annual drive. This was some $115,000 and 350 donors ahead of last year's campaign on the same date.
In a June 1 appeal to all non-contributors Alumni Fund Chairman Rupert C. Thompson Jr. '28 wrote, "We need at least 8,000 more donors and $750,000 to reach our goal." And he concluded, "Dartmouth deserves our best.
A mid-May survey of classes in the Green Derby competition showed that 46 of 60 classes were ahead of 1965 in dollars and about half were ahead in contributors.
The Alumni Fund office in Crosby Hall was getting set for its peak load throughout June. Two final reminders will be mailed around mid-June, and the Fund staff will service a last-minute telephone campaign from offices in Boston and New York on June 28-29 in an effort to secure all possible gifts.
The 25th Reunion Class of 1941 has already raised over $45,000 for the Alumni Fund as part of its total Class Gift, while 1942, one year away from its reunion, is over the $40,000 mark, with both classes anticipating final totals between $50,000 and $70,000. The Dartmouth Parents Fund also is rolling along with some $45,000 in gifts toward its 1966 goal of $70,000.
June is the month of Commencement, reunions, and Alumni Council meetings—all of which help the Fund. "I still don't see how we're going to do it," says Cliff Jordan '45, the Fund's executive secretary. "We must average 350 gifts and $15,000 each day throughout June. That's a lot of mail and a pile of gifts."
But by June 30 Dartmouth men will have been heard from and the chances are good that the 1966 campaign will be able to announce complete success and some significant new records.
