Continuing chronologically where I left off last month Warren Fellingham on his return last spring from three months in the South Pacific, which included a month in New Zealand about one half spent in fishing, felt impelled "to verify the report in a recent ALUMNI MAGAZINE about the experiences of Ritchie Smith when he was fishing in New Zealand. One rainy day, I was lounging in a small tackle shop in the South Island looking at mounted fish, photos, etc., when what did I see but a picture of Ritchie with some of the nicest trout man ever laid eyes on. So it was for reel (Ed. Note, Warren's spelling). Better get him to send a copy to you to circulate among the classmates." Thanks, Warren, and if the fish are good looking I will circulate any picture Ritchie sends.
You probably all know from the ALUMNI MAGAZINE about last year's student-inaugurated Experimental College but how many of you know that Chuck Abbott was visiting D.E.C. lecturer last spring on the subject of the stock market? During this Hanover visit the Abbotts ran into Stew and Mary LouOrr who were visiting son Dave and the two grandchildren and had lunch with JohnnyManser, "who had just come back from a trip around the world and who was singing the praises of the Japanese baths complete with massages. He worked in an incredible number in very few days it seems to me." Bob Stopford sends a newspaper photo with the following descriptive addendum: "All aboard's! the signal for Armed Forces Officers Club get-together Friday on the 'Paddle Wheel Queen,' Major General W. P.(Bill) Farnsworth, left, outgoing president, walks up the ship's gangplank following the meeting at the Escape Hotel."
Newly-retired George Leyser had intended to move from his Alexandria, Va., home this fall but "construction in Florida is so speedy I am on my way June 1 to new permanent address: 4942 S.W. 2nd Avenue, Cape Coral, Fla." Another photogenic retired is Lou Ingram a photo of whom as branch president I chanced on in a Spring English Speaking Union Bulletin. Lou served the Centrr.l Florida E.S.U. two terms as president and reports "Muriel and I had a great trip to Britain, Ireland, Sweden, and Germany last summer." Frank Healy writes "you may be interested in the fact that after 58 years I am finally moving out of Mount Vernon. Actually I am only moving two miles so there will be no breaks in my weekly bridge game with Lloyd Sanford. Our bridge sessions stretch back over the years to Mount Vernon High School Days." Courtesy of Frank Tonis '24 I learn that Larry Smith is an organic farmer at Freedom Farm Squires, Mo.
The following are gleanings from Ed Hanlon's Alumni Fund activities: "Bill Pitney has his own electronics specialty company. His home is Ridgefield, Conn. Bill Evans is with Pacific Mills (cotton) Division of M. Lowenstein & Sons. Still in Stamford but has moved from Munko Drive. Henry Andretta is retired and doing some traveling."
Now for some June returned Escoffier Contest Reply Forms News: Johnny Gearhart's favorite outdoor sport is "fishing Canada and the Florida Keys," "indoor sport not what it used to be" and his outstanding memory of each "not fit for class notes or family reading." Anyhow by "cheating some, as the attached recipe is really my wife Hazel's" he contributes a fine "Chicken Von Lent" recipe and closes with "it doesn't seem like a year since our 40th." Tempus sure fugits.
Harry Fisher's favorite indoor sport is photography, outdoor golf and fishing, favorite memory "the good but infrequent days when scores were low and when the fish were biting." He adds "Mary and I saw EdChaffin this spring in Philipsburg. We flew over from St. Croix for the day (about a half hour flight) where we have been vacationing for the past eight years. We find St. Croix the most ideal place and where we hope to spend a few months each year upon retirement. We are glad that the Clearys enjoyed the Fountain Valley Course where we will be chopping up some turf next spring probably in March." Mary in a separate note sends super clam chowder and "thinks this cook book a tremendous idea." Don Hopkins still managing his advertising and sales promotion company, D. B. Hopkins Company, Inc., has these interesting tidbits to report "trip to Greece in May; guests for a week of Oury and Margaret Haisey on board their sailing yacht. He was usher at our wedding 40 years ago; 40th Anniversary in Athens. Then a couple of days in Paris to go again to the places where we met in 1924." My pen starts jumping out of my hand just recording that trip. How can an advertising man be so laconic, a fraternity brother so tight-lipped about it? He goes on, and I am sure the boys won't mind when I call it a let down: "See MaiMerrill occasionally. Holt McAloney and Bob Stopford till they moved to Florida."
Finally, belated spring items from the News Clip Service: Middletown (Conn.) Press "Norman R. Clarke was appointed recently as acting administrative assistant to the executive of Community Action for Greater Middletown, etc." More currently Norm himself says to Class Treasurer JackRoberts: "My retirement did not take. I was asked to help out for a few weeks as a consultant for the Middletown Community Action office (poverty program), but have now agreed to take a regular job with them as assistant administrator. So my home gardening, handy man activities are suffering." New York Times, Charles D. Webster, president of the Horticultural Society of New York, is honorary chairman of the Benefit Tour of Chelsea Area Homes and Gardens. New York Times again this time with photo bearing legend: "It's Official: Jose Torres, left, and Dick Tiger, world light heavyweight champion, sign for return bout, Edwin Dooley, Chairman of State Athletic Commission is at center."
