On June 19, a new advertising agency, Nachman & Shaffran, Inc., opened its doors on New York's Madison Avenue. The president, who supervises account services, is our own Hank Nachman." The agency's first account was Source EDP, which Ed Golden heads; as of the end of August, there were three more accounts.
Both Hank and his partner, who is executive veep in charge of creative work, spent their last three years with Daniel & Charles. Prior to that Hank was with Maradel Drugs, Colgate-Palmolive, International Latex, and Reach, McClinton & Co.
Joe McDonald has moved from sunny Florida to the Golden Triangle. Formerly manager of the West Palm Beach office of Francis I. duPont & Co., nationwide investment firm, Joe is now manager of the company's Pittsburgh, Pa., office. While in Florida, Joe was active in alumni affairs and served as president of the Dartmouth Club of Palm Beach County. He and wife Jane have three sons, Michael, 13, and twins Bryan and Douglas. 11.
The Class does not have that many members abroad; it has even fewer members who are farmers. Mark Heifer is the only classmate who qualifies for membership in both groups. His farm is located in Dorset, England, where he is chairman of the local branch of the National Farmers' Union.
After his discharge from the Navy, Mark was reading for a doctorate in English language and literature at London's University College. On a weekend visit to Dorset in 1956, he met his future wife who was then running Knitsen Farms at Swanage on her own. They now have five children as well as 50 registered milk cows and 180 ewes. Mark pursues archaeology and music on the side and is secretary of Corfe Castle ParentTeacher Association.
Bill Friedlander has been promoted to technical director of 3M Company's New Products Division. He has been with 3M since 1954 and was most recently director of the Contract Research Laboratory. In addition to his Dartmouth A.8., Bill holds both an M.S. and a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois.
George Marshall has been named systems engineering manager for IBM's Detroit Manufacturing branch office in Dearborn, Mich. He joined IBM in 1955 as a systems engineer in Detroit, moving on to Toledo in 1958 in a similar capacity. From 1960 until this promotion, he was a marketing representative working out of Fort Wayne, Ind. George and wife Pat have three children: Nancy, Scott, and Jay.
This summer, I refloated the "Floating Reunion." The American Bar Association had the wisdom to hold its annual meeting in Honolulu. I thought I might stop off on the West Coast in both directions to look up some classmates while adjusting to the time zone differentiaL
On the way out, I stopped in southern California. In the San Diego area, we had a 100% turnout when the Rog McAlisters showed up at host Bob Jackson's. Rog is a Lieutenant Commander in the Navy. He left Dartmouth during his junior year to spend five years as a Navy flyer, returning to Hanover to graduate in June 1957. After that, he did graduate work at lowa and the University of Colorado, where he earned an M.F.A. and was a teaching fellow.
in 1960 he returned to the Navy as a flight instructor at Pensacola, then spent two and a half years in Japan, and came to Miramar (San Diego) early in 1966. Next February he retires from the Navy to Blue River, Ore., to paint, tree-farm, and do a little flying and teaching. Rog and wife Stevie, a Mt. Holyoke graduate, have two daughters, Suzanne, 4½, and Katherine, 2½.
Bob Jackson is manager of the La Jolla office of Coldwell, Banker & Co., a San Francisco-based general real estate brokerage firm. He joined the firm's mortgage loan department in Los Angeles in 1954 after a tour of duty with the Marine Corps, including Korea. Bob went to the new San Diego office in 1959 and opened the La Jolla office in 1965. In addition to managing that office, he supervises the firm's mortgage loan operations for San Diego County.
Bob and wife Liz have three children: Jennifer, 8; Tommy, 4; and Scott, 2. All of them have been camping in Baja California. Bob is also president of La Jollans, Inc., a community planning group for developing a long-range plan for La Jolla and trying to get it implemented by the City of San Diego, of which La Jolla is a part.
Three days before setting out on a family camping trip to the Pacific Northwest, Paul Staley and wife Kit hosted a group of classmates and wives at their home in Long Beach. (I was disappointed not to find an oil well in their back yard.) Most of the classmates present had new jobs as of a few months previous.
As of two months before, John Boardman had become Director of Facilities for Kaiser Medical Care Entities. His job involves the planning and financing of hospitals, clinics, and the like from Santa Barbara to San Diego. He and wife Nella have five girls and one boy.
Gordie Williams had been with System Development Corp. for four months as salary administrator in the Personnel Department. He, wife Trink, and son Jonathan, 9, live in Thousand Oaks. John Greenwood is manager of the new Tustin office of the United California Bank. Wife Joan is an associate professor of English at California State College at Fullerton.
Tom Hatchett is with North American Aviation as a member of the technical staff for Apollo advanced programs. On the side, he teaches business administration in the graduate school at UCLA. He and wife Judy, a registered nurse, have two children, Roger, 11, and Sally, 7.
On the other side of Los Angeles, temporary bachelor Milt Olander was host. Wife Mary Lou, daughter Julie, 11, and sons Milt Ill, 9; Shell, 7; Ben, 5; and Matthew, 9 months, were away on vacation. Milt is vice president and manager of the Wilshire Boulevard office of the Beverly Hills National Bank. In civic affairs, he serves on the board of the Dubnoff School for Educational Therapy.
John and Muriel Sargeant were on hand, as was lawyer Wes Nutten. Wes is president of the Dartmouth Club of Southern California and had recently hosted at his home a party attended by 109 people at which Bob Blackman was the guest of honor. Wes and wife Helen have three children: Kathy, 8; Wes, 6; and Laura Lynn, 4. In addition to being an ardent golfer, Wes serves as vice president and a director of the Los Angeles Child Guidance Clinic.
