Spring Term in Greece
DECEMBER 1967

As an extension of the Dartmouth Foreign Study Program, the Department of Classics will offer a program of study in Greece this spring for approximately ten qualified upperclassmen. Prof. Matthew I. Wiencke will accompany the group abroad and will be in charge of the educational program based in Athens.

The term abroad will provide for directed and independent study in Greek archaeology, art, history and literature, with emphasis on classical Greece as well as the Byzantine and modern cultures. It will begin with a period at the British Museum in London for study of the Parthenon sculptures and other works of Greek art, followed by brief stops in Berlin, Munich, and Vienna en route to Athens. Students will travel to the principal sites on the Greek mainland, Crete, and the Islands.

Although' the program is open to Dartmouth undergraduates regardless of their major, it has been recommended that certain courses in the Classics and in classical or modern Greek will provide the best preparation for the term abroad. Except for the cost of travel to and from Greece, the expense of the special program is estimated to be about equal to that of a term in Hanover.

Dartmouth's Foreign Study Program, involving usually the summer and fall term, has up to now been carried out in France, Germany, and Spain. Approximately 100 students are studying abroad this year, an increase over last year's 65, and next year more than 200 undergraduates are expected to be overseas for varying terms, many of them as participants in a new program of intensive language study that is being planned.
