Coming down the home stretch - toward spring, that is - warm weather, golf, tennis, and REUNION! Three days ago (when I should have started writing this column) it was getting warm, the snow was melting, and thoughts were turning toward warmer pursuits. In the intervening three days, however, we have had two snow storms, shoveled at least three tons of snow, and are beginning to regret the effectiveness of our recent prayers for the white stuff. One thing about New Englanders - they are never satisfied.
To the news on hand. Bob Delaney made the headlines recently as a featured speaker, following his return from Vietnam where he was an official of the American Embassy in Saigon. Speaking on United States policy interests and goals with reference to Asian countries, Bob called upon his experience in several foreign posts to bring this information closer to home. After serving in the U.S. Navy and graduating from Naval Intelligence School and the Naval War College, he joined the Department of State in 1950 and transferred to the U.S. Information Agency in 1953. He has since served in Rome, Budapest, Vienna, San Salvador and most recently in Vietnam. Sounds like a very busy career and I can well imagine that he is happy to be back in the United States where he will study for a year at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University.
Malcolm Johnson has been named publisher of W. A. Benjamin, Inc., Book Publishers in New York City. Prior to this appointment, Malcolm was with Time-Life Books and with McGraw-Hill. Paul Lux, not content with being merely a vice president of Robertshaw Controls Company, has now been elected to the Board of Directors of the Naugatuck Valley Industrial Council, Inc. As reported last year, Paul is also general manager of the Lux Time Division of the parent company.
We were very saddened last month to learn of the passing of Charles A. Denneenand unfortunately, at that time, we did not have sufficient information. However, I would like to include in this column some information sent to me in a lovely letter from Jean Denneen and also to tell her how much we appreciated her thoughtful remarks. Charlie was secretary of the Royal Globe Insurance Company when he died at the age of 44 following a long and heroic battle against cancer; Charlie served in the Navy following graduation from Dartmouth and shortly thereafter went with Royal Globe. He lived in Greenlawn, N. Y., with his wife Jean and his two daughters, Deborah and Joan. Jean said that his great enjoyment in life in his leisure time was sailing and that he was very devoted to Dartmouth throughout his life. Jean, the entire class joins me in expressing our sympathies to you and the children and our hope that you will join with us in class affairs in the years to come.
John Barker has been named general advertising manager of the Hamilton Watch Company in Lancaster, Pa. John has been associated with the Hamilton Company since graduation from Dartmouth. Ivor Jones has been appointed an assistant cashier of the National Bank and Trust Company of Central Pennsylvania. Ivor stayed in the Navy after the war, retiring after 20 years of service as a Commander.
Hard to believe, folks, but that is all the news for this month. Either we are getting older and doing less or you are all more modest and reluctant to boast of your accomplishments. I don't believe either is true so how about coming through in a blaze of glory for my last two columns? You'll miss me when I'm gone.
No need to comment further on the upcoming plans for reunion. The last TOMAHAWK brilliantly reported the wonderful turnout expected in June, and since everyone will be there, you'd better join the wagon. Hopefully the snow will be melting by then, so bring warm clothes and a strong right arm.
Best regards from the hills.
