The Dartmouth faculty has voted to give the College's anthropologists a department of their own and to rescind the regulation that a swimming test must be passed for the bachelor's degree.
With the amicable concurrence of the sociologists the Department of Sociology and Anthropology has now been split atwain. The anthropologists had presented a strong case of past achievements, present accomplishments, and future growth in their request for autonomy.
The former requirement that a student swim 50 yards in less than a minute is no more, but that doesn't mean that the College won't try to see that its graduates can take care of themselves in the water. The swimming test will still be given, along with the other tests in jumping, running, climbing, and lifting. Students who fail the swim test will be enrolled in swimming instruction until they pass the test or until they complete three terms of instruction in swimming.
