At the annual class officers' meetings in Hanover last month awards for top performance were made in the various officer categories, but one all-embracing award was made for THE class officer of the year. The honor went to Albert E. (Ag) Smith '03 who is class president, secretary, treasurer, head agent, and newsletter editor. In making the presentation Josiah Stevenson IV '57, presiding officer at the Saturday luncheon, read the following citation:
Old-timers remember the early cartoons of moving assembly-lines showing production workers doing something different with each hand and foot and sweeping the floor at the same time. Almost everyone has seen a one-man band. But none had heard of a Dartmouth one-man Class Officer Slate until Ag Smith became '03's President, Secretary, Treasurer, Head Agent, and Newsletter Editor.
You did not just begin to be busy with books and papers when you took on these many class duties. In school you spent so much time on books that you came within nine-tenths of one percent of being elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Three Smiths of '03 were elected and there were external suspicions of internal fears that your election, as the fourth Smith, might result in a Smith domination of the Society.
After being graduated you continued to work on the books - law books this time. Then following the practice of law you held simultaneously the two positions of Comptroller and Secretary of the Security Mutual Life Insurance Company, along with elected offices in accounting and management associations.
You are both well-trained and experienced in multiple jobs and eminently qualified for the distinguished Special Award - Class Officer of the Year.
