A $278,500 scholarship fund established at the College will provide scholarships to worthy students from the State of Illinois. This major fund is named for the late Francis C. Hardie '18, who died in August, 1963, leaving the bulk of his estate to the College. His large bequest, on which final distribution was made in 1966, has been established as a permanent endowment with the income to be awarded as scholarships to Dartmouth students who are residents of Illinois.
Mr. Hardie, a retired U.S. Steel executive in Indianapolis, was a native of Evanston, Ill. He began his career with U.S. Steel in 1924 and served as sales manager in Chicago, Cleveland, and Detroit before becoming sales manager of the Indianapolis office in 1950.
