The demands upon educational institutions are greater than ever before, and are increasing. Dartmouth's alumni and friends as well as corporations and foundations meet this challenge in many ways that go well beyond the Alumni Fund or an occasional bequest. The following list of recent gifts, grants, and bequests of $5,000 or more demonstrates the range of gift opportunities and sources which are involved in the support of the College.

Bequests

From the estate of THOMAS A. FOSTER 1910: $6,195 to establish the Thomas A. Foster 1910 Fund.

Final distribution of the trust under the will of CHARLES F. MATHEWSON 1882: $10,602 to be added to an earlier gift of $152,590 which established the Charles F. Mathewson 1882 Fund.

From the estate of BENJAMIN F. PRESCOTT 1900: $73,444 to be added to the Benjamin F. Prescott 1900 Scholarship Fund.

Gifts from Alumni

MR. AND MRS. RALPH SANBORN 1917: A collection of rare books and materials appraised at $14,828.

ALUMNI FUND: 5 additional gifts of $5OOO and over, totaling $30,275 have been contributed since the last time this column appeared. This brings total Fund gifts, at this level, to $124,475 from 18 contributors.

Gifts from Friends

MRS. CHARLES SLOSBERG, widow of the late Charles Slosberg, Brookline, Mass., and mother of Myles J. Slosberg '58; Tuck 1959: $5,606 to be added to the Charles Slosberg Memorial Scholarship Fund, which now totals $49,668. This scholarship has been awarded annually since 1961 to a first-year Tuck student.

Deferred Gifts

GEORGE G. ZAHM 1925: $10,125 subject to life income trust agreement, to add to the George G. Zahm 1925 Fund.

Foundations

Louis BOEHM (1935) FOUNDATION: $5,000 for scholarships to three members of the Class of 1970.

MARIANNE G. FAULKNER TRUST: $7,500 as the third and final payment of a $22,500 grant to the Medical School Campaign.

CHARLES E. MERRILL TRUST: $25,000 unrestricted grant to the Medical School .

NATIONAL FUND FOR MEDICAL EDUCATION: $15,000 for the teaching of gross anatomy by a new Department of Surgery at the Medical School.

NEW HAMPSHIRE MEDICAL SOCIETY: $3,203 unrestricted grant to the Medical School.

Corporations

GENERAL ELECTRIC FOUNDATION: $15,000 to Tuck School and Thayer School to support graduate research and study in engineering, industrial engineering and manufacturing processes, and industrial organization and behavioral sciences.

NEW ENGLAND COLLEGES FUND, INC.: $47,165 unrestricted grant, as Dartmouth's share of gifts to the Fund from corporations.
