Also big in the news this spring was the varsity tennis team, under new head coach John Kenfield. The netmen, behind Captain Charlie Hoeveler, South- port, Conn., posted a 14-5 summary, the best since 1962 when the Indians had a 15-5 record. Hoeveler had a 21-4 regular season singles record, and won the New England singles championship this spring. Teaming up for the fastest doubles combination in New England, Hoeveler and senior Bill Kirkpatrick, Kalamazoo, Mich., closed out with a 22-1 doubles mark. Their lone loss came to a powerful North Carolina team on the Indians' southern trip. Hoeveler and Kirkpatrick entered the singles and doubles in the NCAA Tennis Championships held at Southern Illinois University, losing in early action among the nation's top collegiate performers.
