It is not easy for me to write this first column of our second year as alumni, for I have experienced a difficult summer and suspect that many of you have also.

This past summer, suppression of freedom in Europe, continued hostilities in the Middle East and starvation in Biafra brought despair to many. This past summer, great promise in the form of Gene McCarthy and others espousing progressive ideas ended in great failure. And this past summer, one of our classmates, Bill Smoyer, was struck down by a bullet in Vietnam. For me at least, it has been a summer of heartbreak, anxiety, and lost dreams. It is a strange quirk of fate that after such a summer, we must look for hope to the fall.

Still, life goes on and I am delighted to find that there is a great deal of news of '67's to report. So, let's get on with it.

June and the summer months are a time for engagement announcements and weddings. Please excuse me if this month's column appears to be a concentrated society page, but marriage seems to be the major preoccupation of '67's.

Recently received a letter from Bob Baraff who writes that he is engaged to Carol Garson (U. Pittsburgh '69) and that they will be married in December of this year. Bob also put in a plug for the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and sends his best to . . members and friends of M.M.M.C. (Middle Mass Mens Club)."

Teny Deane married Cheryl Shepley (Conn. College '68) in Jericho, Long Island, this past June. Dick Sidell was the best man. This fall, Teny returns to Albany Med and Cheryl will teach at the Kenwood Academy in Albany and direct the Kenwood Glee Club.

Also tying the knot last June were AlHine and Jane Templeton (UMass '69). Currently, Al is entering his second year of graduate study in geology at UMass. Sixty-seven was well represented at the happy event as Bill Fell handled the best man's chores while Hal Budd, Rick Trepp, and TedTruex ushered in the newlyweds.

Another couple in the June rush to the altar were Bob Stewart and Mary Faerber (Skidmore). Both Bob and Mary are attending Michigan State University.

Marty Zimmerman and Nancy Reiner (Brandeis '68) were wed last August. This fall, Marty continues his doctoral studies in economics at MIT.

I guess Dave Odle wanted to be a non- conformist, so he and Sharon Wright (Simmons '68) waited until July to have their wedding. The newlyweds will reside in Burlington, Vt., while Dave pursues his graduate work at the University of Vermont.

Ralph Kirmser and Sally Ann Maraventano were also part of the June marriage brigade. Sally has started her teaching assignment at Sleeping Giant Junior High in Hamden, Conn., and Ralph is back to the grind at Yale Med.

Would you believe.... Still more wedding announcements.

Lieut. Dave Larson and Mary Brown (Mt. Holyoke '67) were married this past summer. Dave is serving with the Navy Nuclear Submarine Service.

Pete Thomas and Pamela Austin (Wells College '68) were also members of the June bandwagon. Ted Gundy '68 and MilesGraber were present to give the ceremony the proper Dartmouth atmosphere. Pete enters his second year at Tufts Dental School this fall and Pamela plans to teach English while working for her master's degree at BU.

Taking the vows this past June were Dave Straus and Iris Margolis (Monticello '68). Joe Alviani and Dave's younger brother, Steve '70, served as ushers. Graduate work at Temple University lies ahead for Iris and another year (second of three) at Penn Law awaits Dave.

A writer who wishes to remain anonymous reports that Jim Kenney has been seen in the company of a certain airline hostess.

Andrew (Drew) Ives and Jean Griffiths (U. Maine '67 and U. Denver '68) were also married in June. The Ives are residing in Clarksville, Tenn., while Drew serves his hitch with the Army at Fort Campbell, Ky.

In still another June wedding, Fred Price married Ann Streger (N.Y.U. '68). Three '68's - Ric Gruder, Pete Hofman, and Rich Lappin served as ushers. Fred is currently attending the Wharton School of Finance and Commerce.

University of Michigan Law School student Mark Sisitsky and Donna Fox were also recently married. Charlie Coe and Gene Ryzewicz '6B performed some of the ushers' chores.

Tony Dalrymple and Candice Vultaggio (Bryn Mawr '68) tied the knot last summer. After completing work for his master's from the University of Hawaii last June, Tony moved on to the University of Florida where he is employed as a research engineer in the Oceanographic Department of the Coastal Engineers.

Before heading back for his second year at Penn Law, Rob Kugler became engaged to Susan Dee Sanders (Skidmore '67).

Finally, for this month anyway, Nat Fuller and Carolyn Snitko (Mary Hitch School of Radiology '68) were married in Hanover at the St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic church. Nat is an ensign in the Navy and is presently stationed in San Diego, Cal.

Bob Span tells me that plans are afoot for a picnic, party, or open bar after, before, or during houseparties weekend or in Cambridge. As you can tell, plans are still pretty indefinite. Anyone interested in any kind of get together, please respond to Bob's plea in the Newsletter.
