Frank Smallwood '51, Professor of Government, has been named Associate Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and chairman of the Division of the Social Sciences. He succeeds Prof. William M. Smith, chairman of the Department of Psychology.
Professor Smallwood, an authority on metropolitan government and problems of urbanization, earned A.M. and Ph.D. degrees at Harvard, and returned to Dartmouth in 1957 as executive assistant to President Dickey. Two years later he joined the faculty as Assistant Professor of Government. He was promoted to full professor last year.
Professor Smallwood is chairman of the City Planning and Urban Studies Program at Dartmouth, and has been co-director of the Boston Urban Studies Project sponsored jointly by Dartmouth and M.I.T. He is also chairman of the Dartmouth Bicentennial Planning Committee.
The chairmen of the Division of the Sciences and the Division of the Humanities also serve as Associate Deans of the Faculty, in posts similar to that now filled by Professor Small wood.
