DEAR ALL-PONTIFICATING VOX, Does the stone-clad viaduct behind the Tuck School have an official name? What, do Tuckies call it?
DEAR JONATHAN,
The viaduct, built in 1930, doesn't have an official name—or any nickname that I'm aware of. Originally built to provide access for service vehicles to the rear of Stell Hall, the bridge has restored about a dozen years ago and can accommodate the College's largest tracks. It is a very solid structure—so solid; in fact, that Tuck's Whittemore Hall residence (now under construction) will incorporate the structure as an integral part of its courtyard. The viaduct's status as a Dartmouth landmark was reinforced in the 1996 novel Red Leaves, by Paullina Simons, a murder mystery set in Hanover in which a woman's body turns up near the bridge.
