Language Study Grant
DECEMBER 1968

The Romance Languages Department has been awarded a SPUR grant of $48,790 by the Esso Education Foundation in support of an "Experimental Program in Intensive Language Instruction." Directed by John A. Rassias, Professor of Romance Languages, the new program is aimed at developing thorough competence in the language studied by combining a number of tested teaching techniques in new ways and introducing the use of undergraduates as apprentice teachers to conduct intensive drill sessions. These methods have developed from seven years' experience in training Peace Corps volunteers.

The Esso SPUR (Support for Promoting the Utilization of Resources) program encourages experimentation in education, especially programs that increase the efficiency and effectiveness of teachers and facilities in ways that can be used by other colleges.
