The Inn's Hayward Room
FEBRUARY 1968

THE DEDICATION of its main lounge in memory of the late Sidney C. Hayward '26, for 35 years Secretary of the College, marked the opening of the new Hanover Inn last month.

President Dickey, in addressing community leaders and alumni who were in Hanover for January 12 meetings, said, "We gather to dedicate this room to the memory of Sid Hayward, his dedication to all things Dartmouth, but above all his unstinting and ceaseless service to the fellowship of this College.

"For Sid it did not matter greatly whether an alumnus was a V.I.P., whether he was a benefactor of the College, or in truth what he was, so long as he — or she - was a member of the Dartmouth family. That was enough to command his interest and help."

He noted that the. participants in the ceremony represented the "abiding loves of his life" - his widow, Barbara, and family; the Alumni Council and Dartmouth fellowship; and the outdoors as painted by his hunting and fishing companion, Paul Sample '20.

The last reference is to a north country hunting scene which hangs in the new lounge and which was commissioned by the Class of 1926 and presented by Herbert H. Harwood, acting for the Class. Over the fireplace is a portrait of Mr. Hayward, which formerly hung in Baker Library and which was painted by Peter Gish '49 several years ago at the instigation of friends and classmates.

In addition to President Dickey and Mr. Harwood, speakers at the brief ceremony were Delwyn J. Worthington '26, president of the Alumni Council, and Mrs. Barbara E. Hayward, who spoke for Sid's family, gathered for the occasion.

The Hayward Room, with windows providing a view of the Green, is off the lobby in the Inn's new west wing. Complete opening of the new Inn, including the underground garage and a food and drink area, is set for the middle of February.

The Inn's role as a public service, although operated by the College, is paralleled by Sid Hayward's career. His approaches to fund-raising and public and alumni relations provided a pattern for universities across the nation. Among other community services, he was chairman of the Lebanon Regional Airport, trustee of Cardigan Mountain School, and a director of the New England Council. His memory has found a place next to the front door of the new Inn, which itself has been called "the front door to the College."

Viewing the Peter Gish portrait of the late Sid Hayward at the dedication are (l to r)his wife, Barbara E. Hayward; sister, Miss Elizabeth Hayward; and daughters, Nancy(Mrs. Jerry Mitchell '51) and Mary Ann (Mrs. Ted Harris '58).
