MARCH 1968 ROBERT B. FOSTER '48, DICK WATSON '59

Hartford is winding up for a jam-packed finish to the '67-'68 season, although we don't mean to rush things by talking about the "end" already. We hope at this point to be in time to announce that the luncheon speaker for the March 13 luncheon will be Judge William H. Timbers '37, Chief Judge of the U.S. District Court of Connecticut. Judge Timbers will be on loan to us not only from the District Court, but also from our friendly neighbors, the Dartmouth Club of New Haven. A lively topic is planned that may smack slightly of the Alumni College, for we understand that's a favorite subject of the Judge.

Our April 10 lunch will be graced with the presence of our good friend, CharlesZimmerman '23 who will speak in his capacity as trustee in charge of the Bicentennial Celebration Program at Moor's Charity School in Columbia, Conn. This will actually be the kick-off of a year of programs designed to look back and remember our past 200 years, which gives the ball to Hartford in a big way. May 1969 is the expected date of a "Day with Eleazar," and Ted Rice '5l will be coordinator of activities. This and other phases of the Bicentennial will be discussed in detail.

And now, a switch in your calendars if you will bear with us. It was reported in our latest Smoke Signals that May 5 would be the date for the East's largest Rugby match at Farmington, but there has had to be a rescheduling. The final day will really be April 28, a week earlier. Now that seems simple, but you will also note that the 28th was reserved for "Seymour and Sons," a new twist from Hanover that features Dean Thad Seymour and a team of variously-talented students who present to prospective students and alumni a capsule picture of the many sides of Dartmouth College. Well - as of this writing, we're now hoping to have this much-hailed extravaganza on Friday, April 26. Naturally, we'll keep you posted, but here is one enrollment-oriented program that you won't want to miss if you have to steal a ticket for it. Some of you will probably be asked to house a student overnight, and, as anyone who has done that in the past can tell you, that is an outstanding experience in itself.

Director of Athletics Seaver Peters '54 will be with us on May 22 for our annual meeting, but more on that later.

Looking back for a moment, we see JackCrouthamel '59 of Bob Blackman's coaching genii speaking to a well-attended Smoker back in January at the Tobacco Valley Inn. A large crowd of alums not regularly seen at luncheon meetings showed up, which further added to the success of the evening, for that's why it was planned in lieu of a noon gathering. During February, MajorCharles S. Mills Jr. '57, formerly having seen action in Vietnam, delivered a different and most enlightening message about the war in that country. No one can say that Program V. P. Peter Schwartz '60 isn't doing an outstanding job of providing a most varied and interesting fare in the way of programs ... and if you don't say so, don't tell Pete.
