This month Shep Wolff is guest columnist. He has sent me much of the news which follows.
"Harriette and I have been attending the swimming meets at Hanover quite regularly. At the Navy meet in January we encountered Rose and Hank McCarthy. Recently I attended a freshman swimming meet and sat with Sid Hazelton, who coached both freshman swimming and freshman football in our days. Sid is still a big man with a sense of humor as refreshing as ever. He recalled the slogan he created coming home from the Princeton freshman football game: 'The spirit of '31 - they do not choose to score!'
"Rog Richardson dropped in on us recently to say hello and to surprise me very pleasantly by telling me about his place in West Woodstock which is only about ten miles from our property. Since his visit we have seen his set-up and it is lovely! Boy, does he have plenty of elbow room in a dandy location. Rog is bugs on skiing and that's how he got interested in the West Woodstock property. He gets up here quite frequently year-round, for he is still very busy with his business in Attleboro, Mass.
"Bill Little and I have been in touch. Bill is showing interest in Vermont. Hope more thirty-oners come this way.
"Marty Zinn writes 'Wish I could sit down with you and renew what used to be a fine friendship. The Southwest still treats me well and my family keeps growing and making progress. My daughter is married as of last August, now living in Torrance, Calif. My oldest son is associated with me here in Dallas, the next oldest is in Uncle's Air Force, stationed in Riverside, Calif. Last summer saw my wife and me touring northern points in Europe and taking a cruise up the coast of Norway.'
"There has been a little confusion about John Benson's new responsibilities. The fact is that he is vice-chairman of the Board of Directors of the . National Shawmut Bank, and he is president of the Shawmut Association, a holding company controlling several banks in eastern Massachusetts.
"George Nickum's son Bill got his picture in the ALUMNI MAGAZINE for February. I judge from the caption that Bill is attending Vermont Academy, Incidentally, the rumor is that George Nickum is married again. We need details from the far West!
"Midge and Dick Fisher write that they had their first family reunion in eight years with their oldest daughter Janet and her husband, in Winchester, Mass. Their second daughter Carol and husband and grandson flew to Winchester from Akron, Ohio, and daughter Sally flew up from the University of South Carolina. Dick is active in the Milwaukee Curling Club. He cites a typical weekend: curled Friday night; played tennis Saturday and shot 81 for eighteen holes of golf on Sunday. 81! That's my score for 9 holes!
"Then, three weeks later, Dick wrote again with details of the untimely death of Jack Reno, covered elsewhere in this issue by Rog Burrill. At the Mayo Clinic Dr. EricWollaeger was most helpful to Jack, as well as Dr. Ed Judd '32. Daughter Lynne Reno Pierce flew from Brazil to Rochester with her five-month-old baby which Jack had never seen and which gave him a great lift for several days. Dick Fisher served as a pallbearer. There is much, much more to remember about Jack Reno but space will not permit.
"All's going fine up here in Pomfret, Vt., and hope that more of you come by to visit."
My gratitude to Shep for all the above material. This would have been a short column indeed if he had not pitched in.
Hugh Neely also passed away during February, and there will be details in this or a subsequent issue.
The Class will be saddened to know of the death, February 19th, of Margaret Guernsey, wife of our Sher, after a long illness. Many of us will remember meeting her at a number of our Class gatherings. Our deep sympathy goes out to Sher and his family among whom is Sher II '68.
A note from Larry Allen to Parker Soule in Hanover and also to myself, tells that PanKent's son, Capt. Daniel W. Kent, was killed in action in Viet Nam, January 24, 1968. Send a card to Francis W. Kent ("Pan") , 42 Waterston Road, Newton, Mass. 02158.
Frank Gavan, who some years back already had compiled an impressive list of 25 published articles, has written what is believed to be the most comprehensive piece yet on "Wear Testing" as a chapter in the recently issued technical book, Testing of Polymers (Vol. III), published by Interscience-Wiley Publishing Company, New York. Frank, who has been with Armstrong Cork Company since 1931, is currently general manager of the Physical Standards Department at the company's research and development center.
Jim Hausman has been re-elected to a two-year term as Governor of the New York Athletic Club. He also was recently reelected president of the New York A.C. Anglers. He holds memberships in the Lambs' Club, the Bermuda Anglers' Club, the Royal Hamilton Dinghy Club of Bermuda, the Rod and Reel Club of Miami, Circus, Saints and Sinners, and the Poor Richard Club of Philadelphia. Hardly a stay-at-home!
At the Dartmouth Club of Boston dinner in February was a booming '31 group: Roly Peterson, Jim Frame, Bunce Clarkson, Hank McCarthy, Dave Borkum, Parker Soule, Ed Langenbach, John Boermeester, Orrie Hobbs, and Rog Burrill.
John Goodwille was elected executive vice president of the Dole Valve Company, Chicago.
A phone call from John Benson prior to his two weeks' excursion with Gladys to the sunny Virgin Islands. He said the Rockwells, the Boermeesters, and the Bensons all got together for dinner in February. Also he saw Gale Freeman for dinner recently. He was the one that tipped me off on George Nickum's marriage.
John and Marion Boermeester joined Trudy and me for dinner recently, after which we all adjourned to the music room downstairs and culled over a bundle of old songs which they had brought me.
Again, thanks, Shep, for all the news and names. Next month I hope I can appoint another guest columnist. Would anyone like to try for it?
