Time rolls on, faster than I like to believe. By the time you read this, the Spring Term will be under way, the last remains of snow will be fighting a losing battle to the warming sun, mud and slush will be the order of the day, and the second-year students will be on the home stretch. Most of them will still be deliberating (and agonizing) over which of many outstanding job opportunities to accept, but fully realizing that they "never had it so good."
And how about those who have gone before them. From all reports, the Tuck alumni body is not suffering either and the promotion parade continues to roll on. Randy Malin T'59 has been named assistant to the president of American Airlines. Randy was formerly director of economic research and joined the new president of American soon after he took office. In the same company, Peter Makowski T'65 has been recalled into the Army Air Corps but, hopefully, will report back to American Airlines following his tour of duty.
A long letter from Don Ash T'49 to Dean Karl Hill filled us in on his travels and promotions. After an enjoyable stay of two years in Naples, Don moved to England with Gulf Oil. At the present time he is responsible for all marine and pipeline transportation for Gulf Eastern Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of Gulf Oil Corporation. Among other things, Don's division operates a fleet of British, Dutch, and Belgian flag tankers and is now involved in the construction of a special trans-shipment terminal at Bantry Bay in Ireland to accommodate the largest oil tankers in the world.
Gene Radford T'41 was elected an assistant treasurer of the Eastman Kodak Company. Gene began his Kodak career immediately following graduation from Tuck but interrupted his career to join the Navy in 1943. Returning to Kodak, he went into the treasurer's department where he has been assistant to the treasurer until his latest appointment.
Ralph E. Badger T'14 is co-author of a new book "The Complete Guide to Investment Analysis" which was published by McGraw-Hill late last year. Kenneth L. Anderson T'32 was editor of the book "The Women in Our Life - Insurance." Mr. Anderson is president of Research and Review Service of America and was formerly associated with the Union Mutual Life Insurance Company of Maine.
Erwin Lyon T'40 has been appointed cost control manager at the Ansonia plant of Anaconda American Brass Company. Ellsworth Trowsdale T'48 has been named vice president and general manager of Don Q Imports, Inc., of Miami, Florida, exclusive U.S. importer of Don Q rums from Puerto Rico. He was in the paper industry prior to joining Don Q and will now make his headquarters in Miami. Sounds like my old classmate is leading a swinging life.
Bill Ziegler T'52 has been named vice president-international of United States Plywood-Champion Papers, Inc. and head of its export division. Bill will also represent the firm's interests in two Belgian-based companies. Prior to his new appointment, he was general sales manager for Champion Papers. Warren Smith T'28 has been promoted to general sales manager of consumer products by the Kendall Company's textile division. Robert Levinson T'46 has been named chairman of the Duplan Corporation in New York. He is also a director and former vice president of Bangor Punta Corporation.
Henry Mueller T'50 has been appointed military sales manager of Oscar Mayer & Co. in Madison, Wis. John Wiseman T'56 was elected a vice president of Citizens Trust Company, having moved up from his position as assistant treasurer. Peter Bergholtz T'68 was recently promoted to equipment installation supervisor by the New England Telephone Company. Harold Frank T'48 has been promoted to merchandise vice president by Abraham & Strauss in New York. Harold joined A&S following graduation with the great Class of 1948 and has held a variety of positions throughout the store's operation.
A recent visit from Tom Noyes T'66 brought the good news that he has jumped from field sales representative to senior market specialists for the architectural products division of Corning Glass. In the same firm, Peter Meehan T'66 has moved from financial analyst to plant controller of this company's communications products division. Dan Donaldson T'66 has been named sales and marketing manager of Smith Metal Arts Company in Buffalo, N. Y., having served as an executive assistant for the past two years. It's really great to see these young men move up the ladder so quickly.
Best regards from the hills.
