It's quite a change from hitting you fellows over the head for your annual Alumni Fund contributions to meeting a deadline for this column, but those present in Hanover on June 16-18 are to be commended for their lack of wisdom in electing me your new class secretary. All of you have been great as dollar contributors, but now I hope you'll be greater as news contributors about yourselves, your families and other classmates so that I may get out an interesting monthly column for the next several years.
Jack McDonald, as our new Newsletter Editor, has done such a thorough job reporting on the big reunion last June that he has left me nothing to say. Happily, however, I found one error in his list of those who attended so that I may now tell you that not only did Phil Dostal attend from California, but Jack neglected to report that Phil was accompanied by his delightful new wife Dorothy. Phil and Dorothy were married last March 20 in suburban San Francisco and in attendance were his three daughters and her three daughters. What a harem! Speaking of weddings, Dick andZelda Goulder acquired their second sonin-law when their daughter Kathy was married on June 15. Why did she pick that date which prevented Dick and Zel from coming to reunion? While we're on the wedding news, I'm indebted to Don Rainie for a clipping from the Boston Herald Traveler of July 6 announcing the engagement of our Laconia, N. H., department store tycoon John O'Shea to Betsey Barrett.
Additional vital statistics dating back to last spring include news of the first grandchild for Jules Wachs on May 22. Via the grapevine we've also learned that the reason Bob McElwain couldn't make it back to reunion was that he was the proud father of a brand new baby about that time. How about that!
One of the difficulties of writing this column after reunion in Hanover is that I presume you were all there to catch up on each other. Reminding myself that such was not the case, I'd like to quote in part from a letter received from Scotty Rogers as follows: "In case you didn't have the news on the annual Greater Cleveland 1940 alumni reunion this year — it was held again, in spite of it being a class reunion year since so few Clevelanders could get to Hanover. This year it was hosted by Lee and Martie Bassett at their lovely home in the 'country' on the Eastern edge of Cleveland. The Bassetts had a fabulous feed worked out, and the turnout was just great. Jack and KayIngersoll, Johnny and Sue Knutsen, Daveand Carol Davenport, Eb and Mevie Cockley, Bill and Jane Huffman, Walt and PatKelley, Dick and Zelda Goulder, Bob andTrudi Williams, Karl and Ginny Bruch,Herb Foster (Mil was in Michigan), Johnand Kay Moore, and Loomie and I. (Keithand Jean Benson had a last-minute conflict.) That's 25 '40's at the Bassetts at one time! (Can anyone match that for a sub-reunion turnout this year?)"
Scotty also writes that upon returning from the Hanover reunion he was "prodded, urged, encouraged and pushed" by Creight Holden to try and get a charter flight group together for a football weekend in Hanover. Scotty circulated a questionnaire to 67 classmates who live in Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan and all of the replies (with the exception of one) were negative. He further writes: "All of the replies commented that the idea was an excellent one, but they were sorry they could not see their way clear to participate. Prominent among those who declined the opportunity was Creight Holden."
Advertising man Tom Ballantyne has been elected a vice president and creative group head at Doremus & Company. He joined Doremus in 1964 as a copywriter in the creative department. Before that, he was associated with Hirsch & Company in institutional sales and with Anderson & Company in the same capacity. He had also been a registered representative for Bache & Company. Residents of New York City, he and his wife Frances live in the "Village" at 244 W. Twelfth Street.
That about wraps it up for this month. I hope I'll see some of you in Hanover at the Holy Cross game or at Yale, Columbia, or Princeton.
