DARTMOUTH opened its 200th year on September 22 and flags were flying all over town — not, however, for the College but because of the firstday issuance in Hanover of the six-cent Daniel Webster stamp. With Governor Walter R. Peterson Jr. '47, United States Senator Thomas J. Mclntyre '37, and General Counsel David A. Nelson of the United States Post Office in town for the stamp ceremonies, the special nature of opening day was somewhat overshadowed. But only until that evening.

Convocation this year was held at 8 p.m. in Leverone Field House. Since opening day coincided with Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, it was .decided to have the exercises after sundown. President Dickey, whose opening address appears in this issue, was given a standing ovation when he finished delivering what was his last Convocation talk. The audience was mindful of his impending retirement, and President Dickey himself referred to it obliquely in his address. This time his traditional conclusion, "We'll be with you all the way, and good luck!" was changed to "We'll be with you awhile and good luck!"

Other Convocation speakers were Carroll W. Brewster, the new Dean of the College; Prof. Donald L. Kreider, chairman of the Faculty Committee on Organization and Policy; Charles L. Johnson '70, president of the Interdormitory Council; and Gary J. Savatsky '70, president of Green Key. Dean Brewster spoke of the need for constructive change and the maintenance of open lines of communication between the administration and students. He also received standing applause at the end of his talk.
