Record Philanthropy
NOVEMBER 1969

A record total of $15,582,508 in gifts, grants, and bequests was received by Dartmouth College in the fiscal year ended June 30, 1969. Of this total $7,127,699 was given to the Third Century Fund, but the remaining $8,454,809 of "ongoing voluntary giving" was a separate record and was more than $1 million higher than the $7,443,342 of the previous year.

An important factor in the growth of ongoing philanthropy to the College, exclusive of the Third Century Fund, was the year's record total of $4,412,371 received from bequests and addi- tions to bequests. Gifts to Dartmouth from corporations exceeded $1 million for the first time. Some 435 companies contributed $1,136,935, an increase of 36.5% over the previous year. Third Century Fund gifts totaling $289,918 were part of this record corporate support.

The breakdown of the year's total of more than $15 million was as follows: Alumni - $7,249,722, Bequests — $4,412,371, Foundations $1,807,804, Corporations $1,136,935, Parents and Relatives - $433,618, Trusts in the Hands of Others - $293,703, and Friends - $248,355.

Worthy of note, though seldom reported, is the fact that 37 alumni clubs are building endowed scholarship funds which now amount to $834,643. Some $30,000 was added to these funds in 1968-69.
