The Commonwealth Fund has given the Dartmouth Medical School a grant of $750,000 to assist the school in ex- panding and modernizing its program to once again offer the M.D. degree. The grant will provide five years of support to expand the Medical School's clinical teaching programs, particularly the disci- plines of medicine, community medicine, and surgery.
The Commonwealth Fund, founded in 1918 by Mrs. Stephen V. Harkness, works largely in the field of medical educa- tion and community health. In 1958 the Medical School received a Commonwealth Fund grant of $1 million to strengthen its basic medical faculty and in 1965 a grant of $300,000 toward founding the Department of Medicine.
Beginning next fall, a full class of 55 students will be enrolled in the Medical School's new curriculum that includes the following major features: the time required to complete medical studies has been shortened; all medical students will be trained as general physicians as the basic preparation for later practice, specialty training, or other career goals; and the year of internship has been made an integral part of medical studies.
