Presidential Analysis Committee
MARCH 1969

As part of the orderly process of selecting a successor to President Dickey, a Presidential Analysis Committee has been formed to consider the nature and role of the presidency during the next decade. The committee, which includes representation from all major segments of the Dartmouth community, will work in cooperation with the joint Faculty- Trustee Search Committee, charged with advising the Trustees on the selection of Dartmouth's thirteenth president.

Specifically, the Presidential Analysis Committee has been asked to "identify those concerns and problems that Dartmouth will face in the next ten years, in order to enable the Search Committee to select the kind of man who can best serve the institution throughout this period." The committee was asked to consider such matters as the future size of Dartmouth, the outlook for financial support, federal funding, graduate education, coeducation, the role of the students in the governance of the College, the future role of the privately endowed liberal arts college in the United States, and "any other matters relevant to the choice of a president."

To assist in its deliberations, the committee plans to solicit opinions from Dartmouth faculty, administrators, students, alumni, and other interested persons. Walter H. Stockmayer, Albert W. Smith Professor of Chemistry, who has been named chairman of the committee, said he expected open meetings will be held soon to hear opinions on the directions Dartmouth might take as it enters its third century. A report has been requested from the committee by June.
