Despite our most vigorous efforts as undergraduates, we failed in a much-desired goal to make Dartmouth co-educational. Now, we're attaining it as parents! Bill Feingold started it all last fall, when his youngest daughter, Virginia, enrolled as an exchange student to study dramatics. Nov," I Bill Fitzhugh's daughter, Portia, has been accepted to spend her junior year studying Russian.

Only seven co-eds were on campus this year, all involved in the drama program" j But Fitzhugh reports there will be 75 or 80 f enrolled next fall. According to Bill, portia chose Dartmouth not only because her dad and brothers all went there, but because it offers the top Russian program in the country! This came as a surprise to me but in checking the curriculum, Portia seems to be right. The college now offers 26 courses in the Russian language and literature. Among the languages, only French has more —35.

Bill reports that Dartmouth's pre-eminence in another field, computers, has figured in the plans of Dero Saunders' son, Dick. Young Dick, who has given many of us guided tours of the Kiewit Computation Center at fall reunions, has just been accepted for graduate work at Physicians and Surgeons Medical School, the toughest of all for a pre-med to crack. His work as a computer programmer at Kiewit was a big plus in Dick's favor, because of the growing importance of computerized medicine and medical research.

GLAD TIDINGS DEPT. Several who have lost mates in recent years have found happiness in a second marriage. Kelly Hamilton married Mrs. Mildred Zika in mid-March. Phil Hemphill married Mrs. Marion Vaughn, and Ginny Steinle has wed an old friend, Hartford Insurance man Carl Wissinger.

In acknowledging a birthday greeting, George Hoke makes a rather disturbing observation. "Most of us are turning 56, which means we're now closer to 60 than 50. Or still worse, closer to 70 than 40." Somehow, I hadn't thought of it that way, George, and it sort of pulls a guy up short, doesn't it?

Hoke, who heads up the law firm of Hoke & Larson in Minneapolis, offered several newsy tid-bits. "Bill Mathers, my old roommate at Yale Law School, came through here a couple of months ago, looking like a million. Dud Russell (now director of transportation for the Minneapolis Grain Exchange) continues to flourish. My elder daughter, Jill, married Lane Johnson, son of Phil Johnson '37. So although neither of my own two boys went to Hanover, my daughter had sense enough to marry a Dartmouth man's son."

Pug Atherton complains that not enough '35ers are finding their way to Hawaii. "As a slight inducement," says Pug, "I own an apartment in the Ikikai hotel. A one bedroom job that sleeps three. Only $325 a month." That sounds like a bargain few can resist. Now, if Lowell Haas will just donate one of those fancy, new United jets....

But, if Pug wants to see classmates, perhaps we'd better check his travel schedule first. He recently invested in a cattle ranch in Kenya, and plans to commute back and forth from Hawaii to Kenya every other year. "A small piece of property," Pug explains. "Only 1,546,000 acres, or slightly more than four times the size of the Island I live on (Oahu)." Although Pug claims be has retired from active business, he still is president of the Honolulu Star-Bulletin and sits on the boards of four corporations.

Another who laments the dearth of '35ers is Cam Duncan, down San Antonio way. "Only '35er I have seen in years is George Colton, who came by last summer on an official college trip. Am still heading Lykes cattle interests in Texas. A lot of outdoor activity. That suits me fine. Our two older boys are married. We have two teen-aged girls at home, who keep us stepping!"

Earl Arthurs, in Charlotte, N. C., writes: "An Rud Childs or Bob Naramore is the from, oua. activity here. Entire family excellent health, and all here in Charlotte. Daughter Jane, a housewife and mother (Grandson Gig now four). Son David, a banker. Daughter Nancy a high school senior. Jane and I are really looking school ,35th reumont forward to the '35th reunion!"

Next time someone sandbags you for fund-raising activities, you can appreciate the magnitude of the job Bill Blakeslee has just tackled. Bill's wife, Ann, writes: "Bill has been named general chairman of Detroit's United Fund Drive. Their goal $30-million. This is the largest drive of its kind in the world." Bill, incidentaly, is group vice president of Chrysler Corporation, in their defense and space program.

Ed Neff reports he is in pubic relations with the Republican Congressional Committee. "Bee here 9 years, or 4 elections. Naturally delighted over this last go-round. two daughters. Carlola in Radford College (Va.) preparing to teach pre-school. Alice Richmond and going great guns!"

Also from Washington Oraa Waterman reDorts that he has weathered seven attorneys general, and is still m the Justice Department as confidential assistant in the Infernal Security Division Total time (Tovernment, including FBI, 23 years. iwo children married, four grandchildren. One child at the University of Tampa. Wife expecting — four poodles!^

Two Western delegates also send greetings this month. Gus Davis from Carson cfty Nev., and Bob Williams, from Billings, Mont. Gus writes that he has been m Nevada for over 23 years, and is the oldest living school counselor in the West. "Daughter Kathy graduates in forestry from U. of Montana this year. Son John is on destroyer duty with the Navy, and married a lovely New Zealand girl. I am lucky to have the same wife, Dorothy, the Army nurse I met in New Guinea in World War II. Hear from Sam Harris in Tacoma, and we plan another get-together this summer Dave Smitft called once from Lake Tahoe."

Bob reports that he has returned to Billings after four years in Tulsa. "Had a bout with hepatitis, and had to give up drinking for the duration. Now dabbling in real estate, when not cutting out paper dolls, kon, Robert Jr. '62, in the Washington office ot Reuters News Service. Daughter, Brooke, married and attending University of Colorado. She made me a grandfather seven years ago."

Don't forget. Alumni Fund Deadline is June 30. Let's ante up for the College, and help Cramp Carrick win his third straight Green Derby title. This is Cramp's finale. Next year Yank Price takes over!
