Robert O. Baumrucker '31 wishes to broadcast an appeal for Dartmouth skiing memorabilia to be displayed in two national ski museums now being established. He reports that he is working very closely with William B. Berry, chairman of the National Ski Hall of Fame and the U.S. Ski Association historian, trying to get as much representation for Dartmouth as possible m the museums. "What I am building toward is a 'Dartmouth Room' - or at least an alcove!"
One museum, the National Ski Hall of Fame, is located in Ishpeming, Michigan, the site of the famous ski jump. The first skiers honored in the Hall of Fame were elected, in 1956, and a number of Dartmouth men have already been included: Charles A. Proctor '00, Fred Harris '11, John McCrillis '19, John P. Carleton '22, Charles Proctor '28, Henry S. Woods '36, and Richard Durrance '39.
The second museum, the Western American Skisport Museum, is just being completed and will be dedicated next November. It is located in California on the "new" Donner Summit, Interstate 80, in the Tahoe-Squaw Valley-Sugar Bowl area. Nearby, over Boreal Ridge, is the cabin of the Dartmouth Outing Club of Northern California, of which Mr. Baumrucker is currently president. His interest in skiing dates from his Dartmouth years when he was a member of the ski team.
In general, his appeal for the museums is for anything "that would be suitable in perpetuating Dartmouth's contribution to the present level of the sport" of skiing. More specifically, he would appreciate donations of old Winter Carnival issues of the Pictorial; personal photographs of the early days of skiing, dated and with captions; old books on skiing; copies of the Aegis, 1909 to the present; skiing trophies; and old skis and bindings. He suggests that to avoid duplication prospective donors check with him first by postcard before actually sending anything. His address is 443 Roosevelt Way, San Francisco, Calif. 94114.
