George Putnam '05 Named Class Secretary of the Year
JUNE 1969

The honor of Class Secretary of the Year was conferred on George William Putnam'05 at the gathering of class officers in Hanover on May 3. The following citation accompanied the award: In '50 the Class of '05 announced that for the next 50 years you, Put, would be Class Secretary. There are but 30 years to go on the 50 and no one wants you to write 30 on the last of your class notes until the time remaining on your term of office is completed.

The figures of 50-05-50 hardly describe the classic beauty of Miss America chosen annually at Atlantic City, but for more than 50 and 5 years you have been teaching the classics to young women - boys too - in your home state of New Jersey with apparent outstanding results if that combination of figures can be considered any measure of your success.

It's not all Greek to you because your linguistic capabilities embrace ten other languages including Sanskrit and Japanese. The only caveat at the time of your election as Secretary was that you agree to communicate with your classmates in plain English, preferably in easily understood monosyllables. Some precautions must always be taken when choosing a Phi Beta Kappa for high office.

For five years you nave qualified for membership in the exclusive 100% Club open only to those who submit class notes for every issue of THE MAGAZINE and always well before the deadline. You have been very successful in getting items from and about many '05ers which your linguistic versatility enables you to present in concise and newsy form. Your travel plans always include time for visits with classmates and, whenever possible, you attend informal class gatherings - five in Florida this winter. . .

In recognition and appreciation of your many accomplishments we are honored to designate you as Class Secretary of the Year.
